🍂 AUTUMN HOLIDAY SEWING WORKSHOPS ARE NOW OPEN! 🧵

This October, The SewCiety School will be running a range of creative sewing workshops for children and teens in St Albans.

Whether they’re complete beginners or already love sewing, students can choose a workshop based on what they’d most enjoy making — from Halloween-inspired pieces and autumn fashion to dressmaking, customising and upcycling.

🍂✂️ Autumn Term is officially underway at The SewCiety School!

Week 1 is always about easing back into things — refreshing sewing machine skills, designing, choosing fabrics and starting to develop those first ideas.

I loved seeing how much the students were inspiring each other this week. Interestingly, quite a few of them decided they wanted to make bags 👜 and the deep indigo denim was definitely a favourite 👀💙

There’s already lots of experimenting with different textures and details too — faux fur, tartan, chains, trims and pockets — so I’m really excited to see how all of their ideas come together over the next few weeks.

One of my favourite things about these classes is that everybody doesn’t have to make the same thing. Students are encouraged to come up with their own ideas, choose their fabrics and details, and then learn the sewing and construction skills needed to actually bring those designs to life. ✨

And if you missed Week 1, it’s not too late to join us. Catch-up options are available for students joining the autumn term, so they can get settled in and up to speed.

I also support students who would like to use sewing and fashion as their Skills section for the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award. 🧵✨

Looking back at summer as we head into our Autumn term 🍂🧵

One of my favourite things is watching a student slow down, trust the process and realise just how much they’re capable of making.

She worked so carefully on this summer dress — no rushing, taking her time with each stage — and because of that, she actually finished quicker than expected! ✨

And she didn’t stop there… she even had time to make a matching blanket too 🥹🤍

This is exactly what I want students to get from The SewCiety School — not just leaving with something they’ve made, but building confidence, learning proper sewing skills and being proud of the process along the way.

Our Autumn weekly sewing classes are starting now, and there’s still time to join. If you can’t make the first session, that’s absolutely fine — you can still join and we can arrange a catch-up so you don’t feel behind.

I’ve also been updating the website with new workshops, including our early October/Halloween sessions for students who break up a little earlier 🎃✂️

And we now have payment options available to help make joining a little easier too.

Autumn is one of my favourite terms for sewing 🍂✂️

As the weather starts to change, students often begin thinking about completely different projects — something cosy to wear, a Halloween or fancy-dress idea, a plushie or soft furnishing for home, or even an old piece of clothing they’d like to upcycle and transform into something new.

At The SewCiety School, students are encouraged to bring their own ideas and make projects that genuinely interest them. With small, supportive groups, they can build confidence on the sewing machine, learn new construction skills and work towards something they’re really proud to take home at the end of the term.

Where possible, students will also keep their sewing pattern, so they can use it again and practise making the project at home if they have access to a machine.

Our autumn term runs for 6 weeks, with limited catch-up availability if a session is missed.

Sarah made this. At 10. 🤯🧵

A fully lined, Chanel-inspired tweed jacket with a collar, pockets and pearl buttons — and honestly, the finished result looks like something you’d pick up in a shop.

Sarah has been sewing with me for quite some time now, so as her confidence and construction skills have grown, we’ve also started introducing her to pattern making. The pattern for this jacket was prepared in advance, but she worked through the garment construction herself with so much focus and care.

You’ll also see her using her own advanced digital Janome machine in the reel. It’s a beautiful machine and gives her access to lots of extra features, but I do want to say that you absolutely do not need an advanced machine to make something like this. A good standard domestic sewing machine would still be completely capable of producing this jacket — the real difference comes from learning the techniques and understanding how a garment comes together.

This is exactly the kind of progression I love seeing at SewCiety School: starting with the basics, building confidence, then moving into more advanced garment construction and pattern work.

“What makes you happy?” 🥹🧵✨

For Sarah, I think sewing might just be one of those things.

I’ve had the pleasure of teaching Sarah privately for almost 3 years now, and at just 10 years old, watching her confidence, skills and creativity grow has been so special. She genuinely has such a passion for fashion, loves her brands and already knows that she wants to become a fashion designer. 🤍

And THIS jacket… 😍

A Chanel-inspired jacket, completely made by Sarah — with a matching skirt too. The amount of work, patience and attention to detail she has put into this piece is incredible. Even the inside is beautifully finished, and I cannot wait to show you the full look properly.

This is what I love about private sewing tuition — having the time to really develop a young person’s individual interests, challenge their skills and help them work towards the things they want to create.

🧵✨ Our September sewing term starts Saturday 12 September in St Albans!

We’re back at St Paul’s Church, St Albans with weekly sewing classes for children, pre-teens and teens.

Across the term, students will build their sewing skills while working on projects they actually want to create — learning garment construction, sewing techniques, how to use patterns and fabrics, and becoming more confident on the sewing machine along the way.

Classes are kept small and friendly, with plenty of individual guidance and lots of creative freedom.

We also have a new Tuesday after-school class starting from 8 September, alongside our Saturday classes.

Before the fabric is cut and before the sewing begins, there’s the idea. ✏️🧵

One thing we really encourage at The SewCiety School is taking time to actually design.

We live in such a fast-paced world where it’s so easy to see something online and think, “I want to make that.” But fashion is so much more than copying what we see.

We want our students to think about their garment.

How will they get into it?
Will it have pockets?
What shape do they want?
Are there any special details they want to add?
How would they style it once it’s finished?

These sketches are just a small selection of the ideas created by our students during our summer workshops, before they went on to bring their designs to life.

And I love that even the drawings themselves have so much personality. You can often look at a sketch without ever meeting the person who drew it and already get a little sense of their character, their style and the way they see fashion.

For us, sewing isn’t only about learning how to use a machine. It’s about encouraging young people to think, design, problem-solve and create something that feels like their own. 🤍

The sketch is where the story starts.
