This is what anxious Year 11 students tell me in February and March.

This is the most common frustration I hear from Year 11 students in January and February.

They've been revising since Christmas. They know photosynthesis, electrolysis, forces. But when exam questions appear, their answers are too brief or miss
the point entirely.

Here's what's actually going wrong:
The problem isn't understanding. It's translation.

GCSE Science mark schemes reward specific things:
→ Using precise scientific vocabulary
→ Linking multiple concepts in 6-mark questions
→ Applying knowledge to unfamiliar contexts
→ Structuring extended answers logically

Your child might explain an idea perfectly to you at the kitchen table, but exam answers require a different skill.

That's why my approach focuses heavily on worked examples. Students see exactly what an 8 or 9 answer looks like, then practice writing their own.

We analyse mark schemes together. We identify patterns. We practice until this becomes automatic.

Because understanding content is only half the challenge.
