What is synthetic phonics?

When your child is learning to read there are two crucial things to learn:

1. the sounds represented by written letters
2. how to blend the sounds together to make words.

Synthetic Phonics is a way of teaching reading.

Children are taught to read letters or groups of letters by saying the sound(s) they represent – so, they are taught that the letter l sounds like llllll when we say it. Children can then start to read words by blending (synthesising) the sounds together to make a word.

What are phonics and why are they important?

Everything that we say or write down in modern day English is encoded in approximately 44 sounds, called PHONEMES. These phonemes are represented by the 26 letters that make up our alphabet.

Studies have shown that the most effective phonics instruction teaches children to identify phonemes in spoken language first, then to understand how these are represented by letters and letter combinations (known as graphemes).

This is exactly what we do at Read-To-Achieve.

Good Afternoon Little Learners,

It's been a busy term so far! The Read-To-Achieve staff are so proud of the progress you have each made that we think it's time for you to share it with your parents and friends. Therefore on Saturday 11th July at 1pm until 2pm we will host an end of term family phonics session.

Parents it's your chance to discover the many different activities your children take part in, to have fun whilst learning phonics.

First weeks Read-to-Achieve trail session was great! Our little learners did so well to learn the first 4 letters of our programme. Dancing, singing reading and using their voices to reinforce the sounds of each letter. Well done!!! All that's left to do now is practice, practice, practice, ahead of next week.
