Latest blog post on my site đ¨
This week Iâm sharing my view on the nature versus nurture versus trauma debate - it is, of course, a subjective view but I talk about my own experiences, my childrenâs experiences, and the role of environment and inter-generational traumaâŚđ
âI decided to write this post because this is something lots of my ADHD coaching clients wrestle with, especially early on in their awareness journey (I know I did) - Just where does ADHD come from? Is it inherited? Is it learnt behaviour? And does childhood trauma play a part?
It's the old nature versus nurture debate that explores how much of someone's traits and behaviours are determined by genetics (nature) versus their environment, and upbringing (nurture), as well as the trauma associated with nurture and adverse childhood experiences. So, where do we begin?â

I recently listened to Andrew Hubermanâs podcast episode on ADHD and focus, and the whole thing was full of some really interesting info and science, but one thing really stuck with me, and that was the bit about attentional blinking. â¨
Huberman credits Richard Davidson and Daniel Goleman, PhD, for their explanation of this in their book Altered Traits: Science Reveals How Meditation Changes Your Mind, Brain, and Body, if youâre interested in learning more!
đ He describes attentional blinks as small mental pauses when your brain temporarily shuts off after focusing on something for too long.
Itâs something everyone does, but for ADHDers it happens a lot more - this isnât because we canât focus (something I often talk about is how ADHD is not an attention deficit, itâs either paying too much attention to too many different things, or paying too much attention for one thing for too long) - itâs that we over focus by lasering into one thing so much we block out everything else.
And it makes sense, I know this is something I do, particularly when Iâm in hyperfocus mode and itâs something my clients and ADHD colleagues do too - we can go all in on a task and while weâre fully immersed, we miss the world around us.
Good news is, there is a way to work with it - Huberman goes on to speak about panoramic vision - softening your gaze to open up the âvisual fieldâ and pull yourself out of that tunnel view. Itâs a quick way to reduce attentional blinks and bring ourselves back to the world around us without losing focus - Iâm wondering if youâve heard about itâŚand if youâve ever tried it when you get stuck in hyperfocus.
If you want to hear more about it, just search Huberman Lab: ADHD and how anyone can focus on wherever you listen to your podcasts! The full episode is 2 hours and 12 minutes - and attentional blinks sit around the 1 hour 10 minutes mark - then come back and let me know what you think. đ

Have you seen this blog post on my website? đ¨
I walk you through the ADHD diagnosis process where myself and colleagues share our experiences, and how you can go about it if you feel you might need one:
âGetting an ADHD diagnosis from the NHS as an adult, can take a long time and be quite a frustrating process. By the time your assessment date comes, youâve probably already been through the knowing and not knowing phase, done copious amounts of research on what is ADHD and tried to piece together your story, that youâve had since you were a child with a new perspective.
Things may have started to make sense, but at the same time, you could be still stuck in a "Do I or Donât I?" cycle, not sure whether what you're thinking and feeling is ADHD, Executive Dysfunction or "all in your mind" or "but doesn't everyone feel like this".
The decision to get diagnosed is a very personal one and one that only you can make for yourself butâŚâ Read more here đ https://www.ayamacoaching.co.uk/post/adult-adhd-a-guide-to-getting-a-diagnosis-the-process-and-your-options

So grateful to have been featured on another podcast this month - this will be my second in July! đ§
Huge thank you to fellow E17er for having me on her pod âThe Mess Weâre Inâ and for giving me the opportunity to share about all things neurodiversity, ADHD, creativity and how we really need to give ourselves permission to be messy and be with the messy with compassion and without judgement.
Hereâs a few things we spoke about:
đ¸ The reality of living and leading with ADHD
đ¸ How interest drives ADHDers, not importance
đ¸ Creativity, pattern recognition and why neurodivergents people are so brilliant at big-picture thinking
đ¸ The emotional and physical weight of day to day tasks like tidying up
đ¸ Burnout, executive function and how I support my clients to âdo ADHD on purposeâ
đ ď¸ In the Pod, I offer up some practical tools for self-regulation, including my free downloadable morning journal (which you can grab through the link in my bio).
It was a really great conversation with Liv, full of honesty, with some insights that might help you if youâre undiagnosed (but suspect you have ADHD), newly diagnosed, or even have been diagnosed for a while.
Thanks again, Liv!
You can listen wherever you get your podcasts or follow the link in my bio!

I have another podcast guest appearance for you! đ§
This time I joined on the Single Parent Podcast to talk all things parenting as a neurodivergent single mum to a neurodivergent child, ADHD, and letting go of shame - specifically:
đ¸My mum recognising signs of ADHD in me as a child and receiving my diagnosis at 40
đ¸Supporting my son through his diagnosis and challenges at school
đ¸Why understanding neurodivergence is necessary for breaking shame cycles, at home and in school and the importance of compassion, for both our children and ourselves
đ¸The role of language and framing when speaking about neurodivergence
đ¸Recognising our strengths and successes, not just our struggles
đ¸What needs to change in schools and workplaces to get to a point where diagnosis isnât a barrier to getting the support we need
Incredibly grateful to ZoĂŤ for having me. If youâre feeling overwhelmed or stuck in the neurodivergent parent shame cycle, this could be for you - you can listen wherever you listen to your podcasts or the link in my bio.
And thereâs another guest appearance coming very soon... so keep your eyes peeled! đ

Just finished watching Good Omens and itâs absolutely brilliant, David Tennant, Michael Sheen and the cast were fantastic, with a lot of well-known names.
â ď¸ [SPOILER] Itâs about good and evil and the war that heaven and hell want to wage amongst themselves, and the birth of a young boy who is the devil's son, who then goes on to prevent Armageddon.
It made me think about a viral Instagram post I'd seen, someone asked ChatGPT, âHow would you create evil in the world?"
When I first saw it, I went to test it out myself, typing the exact same thing. It described the younger generation's experience of life in the 2020s, and I found it pretty concerning (I have tried again since, and the answer changes in different contexts).
It gave a breakdown of how you can slowly breakdown humanity through our everyday behaviours that start young and chip away at our capacity for connection, focus and self-awareness. Here's what it said:
â Get children hooked on tech
â Destroy focus with overstimulation
â Use dopamine-driven platforms to hijack the brain's reward system
â Isolate people from real-life communities and purpose
â Remove moments of silence, rest and self-reflection
Everything we know is already harming our mental health and nervous systems - especially true for ADHDers, who are more sensitive to dopamine-giving tech, hyper-focused scrolling and overstimulation.
So I asked how we can prevent it, and the answer was great - small, grounded practices that we can incorporate into our day, like:
â¨Morning quiet time
â¨Journaling
â¨Mindfulness
â¨Sunlight and fresh air
â¨Focusing on purpose and real human connection.
All suggestions I make when coaching my ADHD clients.
They're simple to build into our lives, they're great for emotional regulation and intentional living, rather than pulling our brains in 100 different directions, and they're also activities in my own morning routine journal that I use (which you can also download from my website).
It was a good reminder that small daily habits help us create a more connected, conscious world for ourselves and our kids. It would be great to hear your thoughts on this or your reaction; comment below.

Weâre mad about podcasts this week! đ§
If you havenât seen it already, I was a guest on my first ever podcast last week, and it really was a fantastic experience (huge thank you again to James Hilton Fitness for having me) - you can listen to Jimâs Gym, Inspired Movement featuring me just here: https://open.spotify.com/episode/2IsUEIAeBRPjYO4yYJrikM?
Iâll be appearing on another this week (Iâll be sharing more on that in the coming days) and I have another lined up next week (more on that v. soon too) - for now itâs all one big surprise! đď¸
ButâŚbeing so caught up in them, inspired me to write a post about all the ones I listen to. Theyâve all helped me understand and support both myself and my clients in different ways, and theyâre packed full of real stories, tips and humour Iâm sure many of us can relate to.
đŹ Check it outâŚ.
âWhen I was in the early throes of understanding my ADHD (and sitting at the bottom of a long diagnosis waiting list), I didnât really know where to start. I tried to read Gabor Mate's Scattered Minds, dipped into ADDitude Magazine, and followed a few Instagram accounts; however, as reading is one of my impaired Executive Functions, I found it all a bit overwhelming. What I did find more accessible was listening to podcasts.
Hearing like-brained people share their real, messy, and sometimes vulnerable experiences made me feel a lot less aloneâŚâ
