Let the director see you

Every time you perform, you let a room full of people watch you while you never see yourself. The director becomes your eyes. They watch what you can't, and they tell you what reaches the audience.

That only works when you let them in. Take the note and commit to it fully, even when it feels wrong in your body. Try the version you would never have chosen yourself. Ask questions when a note confuses you, and bring your own ideas into the room. Every time you do, you build trust in both directions.

Fear pushes you to protect yourself. It tells you to play it safe and hold on to what worked last time. Cautious acting rarely surprises anyone, including you. The work opens up when you stop guarding your performance and start building it with the people around you.

Every Audience Is Different

No two nights in the theatre are exactly the same.

One audience laughs where another is silent. One feels completely with you. Another makes you work harder for their attention.

That's part of the training.

Theatre teaches you to sense the room without performing at it. You stay inside the circumstances of the play while staying open to the energy around you.

Don't chase yesterday's laugh. Don't rush because tonight's audience is quiet. Don't manufacture the performance that worked last night.

Listen. Adjust. Stay connected.

Relaxation Creates Focus

Tension takes up space.

On camera, if part of your attention is on remembering the line, finding the emotion, or worrying how you're coming across, that's attention pulled away from the scene.

Relaxation isn't about going passive. It's about releasing what you don't need so your focus can go where it matters: onto your scene partner, what you're hearing, what you want, what just changed.

The camera sees the difference. When you're physically free and mentally available, you can stop managing the performance and start responding.

The Scene Doesn't Start on Page One

Your character had a life before they entered the room.

Something happened five minutes ago. Something happened five years ago. There are conversations they've never forgotten, relationships that shaped them, disappointments they still carry, things they're desperately hoping will happen.

Build that world.

When the past is specific in your imagination, you don't have to indicate history to the audience. It shapes how you enter, what you notice, what you avoid, how you hear the other person.

The audience may never know every detail. They don't need to. They'll see its effect on you.

The Character Lives in the Body

Character work doesn't stop with psychology.
How does this person physically exist in the world?

Age, profession, upbringing, status, health, history, relationships. They all leave traces in the body. How someone sits in a room. How quickly they move. Where they hold tension. How comfortable they are taking up space. What happens physically around someone with more power than them.

The goal isn't to invent a walk or bolt on quirks. It's to understand the character deeply enough that their circumstances start to affect your behaviour.

Theatre gives you the space to explore this. Through rehearsal and performance, physical choices develop and change until they become something you live, not something you demonstrate.

Build the inner life. Build the physical life. Let them inform each other.

Don't Perform the Words

On camera, it's easy to start thinking about how a line should sound. More emotional. More interesting. More dramatic.

But your character doesn't know they're delivering dialogue. They're trying to do something to the person in front of them.

Persuade them. Disarm them. Reassure them. Get them to stay.

When your attention is on what you're doing rather than how you're sounding, the words become behaviour.

Screen acting demands that simplicity. The camera catches the thought before the line and the reaction after it. You don't need to decorate the writing. You need to understand it, pursue something through it, and trust the camera to see the rest.
