Today I thought I’d share this extraordinary armour from Sindh, one of the finest surviving examples of its kind. Sold at Christie’s for well over $300,000, it is a masterpiece of watered steel and precious metal decoration, produced for the Talpur court in the late 18th century.

The fall of Golconda ended the rule of the Qutb Shahi dynasty and brought the kingdom into the Mughal Empire. It marked the greatest extent of Mughal expansion and one of the final great victories of Aurangzeb’s reign…..
This incredible painting depicts the ageing Mughal emperor at the siege of Golconda Fort, overseeing the campaign that would bring one of India’s richest and most formidable kingdoms under imperial rule.

An exceptional Hyderabadi helmet, over three hundred years old….
Across its nasal is inscribed a sacred Qur’anic invocation of victory and divine aid:
نَصْرٌ مِّنَ اللّٰهِ وَفَتْحٌ قَرِيبٌ
“Help from God and a victory near.”
At the crown appear the triumphant words:
يا اللّٰه | يا محمد
A sacred act of Tawassul, seeking divine protection and victory through the Prophet ﷺ
More than just armour, this is faith forged in steel….
From the extraordinary collection of the Royal Armouries in Leeds.

Eid-e-Wilayat Mubarak to all those celebrating.
Ghadir Khumm remains one of the defining moments of Islamic history. Returning from the Farewell Pilgrimage, the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ gathered his followers and proclaimed:
“For whomever I am his Mawla, Ali is his Mawla.”
For Shi’a Muslims, this marks the public declaration of Imam Ali’s divinely appointed authority after the Prophet ﷺ.

Tibet has always stirred my imagination… A land shaped by the devastation of Mongol raids and the harshness of the mountains, it gave rise to warriors of iron will and faith.
This magnificent reconstruction, based on mid-twentieth-century photographs, depicts an elite Tibetan cavalryman poised for defence.
A Chinese composite bow rests beside a matchlock musket, while a spear adorned with flowing yak hair completes his arsenal. Together, they offer a glimpse into the martial world of Tibet and Inner Asia.
A Special thanks to leading researcher Dr. Khorasani for his invaluable insights.

Few mosques rival the beauty of Masjid Wazir Khan in the heart of Lahore. Built during the golden age of the Mughal Empire, it remains one of the finest architectural treasures of South Asia.

For centuries, many Muslims carried the words of the Qur’an not only in their hearts, but also upon the objects they treasured most.
Today, I thought I would share this beautiful nineteenth-century Persian dagger, currently on display at the Met Museum.

Today, I thought I would share this remarkable miniature (ca. 1628), which beautifully illustrates the ancestral lineage of the early Mughal emperors. At its centre sits Timur, the great conqueror from whom the dynasty claimed descent, visually linking the rulers of Mughal India to their celebrated Timurid forebears.

Very few monuments seem to speak their own language... and it beauty could speak, it would speak in the language of the Taj.
For centuries, travellers came, looked, and tried to carry it home through paint and paper the light, the stillness, the feeling of something beyond words...
These are some of my favourite Western paintings of the Taj by the incredibly talented Russian artist Vasily Vereshchagin.
