Welcome to June with a mesmerising image taken from the Geologists' Association 2026 calendar of the Isle of Staffa, Inner Hebrides, Scotland taken by Peter Lincoln.
The island of Staffa, with its famous Fingal's Cave, is entirely of volcanic origin. It consists of black, fine-grained basalt lava from volcanoes active in the Eocene epoch. The slow cooling of one of the lava flows has resulted in the formation of remarkable polygonal columns.
