Beercations are the best 😁
Just wrapping up the first leg of our (I)LeicaBeer train adventure (yes, I came up with this name after a few beers 😅)
We got the train all the way from London to Düsseldorf on Tuesday, then to Cologne on Wednesday
🧐 Why these cities? They each have their own unique beer style and a unique method of service — which is really worth traveling for! 🤎💛🍻
At the brewpubs in Cologne and Düsseldorf, you don’t stand at the bar to order your beer. You take a seat and a blue-shirted waiter, or köbe, drops off a glass of beer — either 200ml at a time in Cologne, or 250ml in Düsseldorf (Just over 1/3 of a pint!)
👉👉👉
The beer is poured it straight from the barrel, using only gravity, and the small serve keeps the beer fresh
…and the beers just keep coming! With each delivery, you’ll get a mark on your beer mat. Until you pop the beer mat on top of your empty glass — the sign you’re ready to pay.
“That’s that delicious little drop!” 🤎🍻
No idea who these people are supposed to be, but I enjoyed posing with them 😅 I just wish I had a glass of Uerige alt in hand!
Altbier has an amber to copper colour and is hop-driven. It’s got lots of bitterness on the palate with varying levels of toasted and/or caramel malt flavor and sweetness to keep that in check
My favourite on this visit was from Schlüssel. They also make a nice alcohol free version. And it’s where we discovered how good Düsseldorf mustard is! (We even bought some to take home 😄)
Kölsch is gold in colour and more malt-driven, with medium bitterness at most and malt aromas of bread crumb and honey
The small glass, called a stange, holds 200ml
I’m certainly no photographer, but I’m pleased with this shot 😄📸
We last visited these cities in 2017 and Päffgen was my favourite, hands down. I was so excited to go back, I booked a hotel right around the corner so we could easily pop in both days were we’re in town 😍
And, that’s a wrap on the beercation part of our trip!
Next stop, Wetzlar, for the Leica part of the (I)LeicaBeer adventure! 📸
Planning to make a similar trip? I’m happy to share reccs for food, cake, and hotels, too. Just lmk! 💌
