Clean cooking needs more than technology.

The transition to clean cooking is often presented as a question of developing and deploying better technologies. But technology alone cannot deliver a transition that is accessible, affordable and sustainable.

For clean cooking solutions to reach the people who need them, we must also consider:

🔹 Infrastructure and distribution

🔹 Supportive policies

🔹 Local entrepreneurship

AFREC & G-SEL Network: Advancing Africa’s Clean Cooking Transition

The African Energy Commission of the African Union (AFREC) is collaborating with G-SEL NETWORK in support of the African Clean Cooking Transition Forum (ACCT Forum), taking place on 23 September 2026 at the African Union Hall, New York, as a G-SEL side event during UNGA 81.

The collaboration strengthens efforts to advance practical solutions for clean cooking across Africa, with focus on policy, investment, innovation, energy access and regional cooperation.

The ACCT Forum will convene key stakeholders across Africa’s energy ecosystem to strengthen dialogue, build partnerships and accelerate actionable pathways towards a cleaner and more inclusive cooking transition.

PANEL HIGHLIGHT | NET ZERO AND BEYOND (August Pre-Conference)

As part of the G-SEL August Pre-Conference 2026, the panel session on “Net Zero and Beyond: Shaping the Future of Energy Systems” brought together diverse perspectives on what a meaningful energy transition should look like for Africa.

The discussion examined the importance of moving beyond a purely global approach to energy transition and considering local realities, indigenous participation, energy access, and economic opportunity.

Key issues raised during the session included:

• The need for local economies and communities to have greater ownership and participation in the energy transition.

• The role of renewable energy in empowering indigenous communities and expanding access to essential services such as healthcare, education, digital connectivity, and financial services.

• The importance of ensuring that the transition to renewable energy does not reproduce or deepen existing inequalities.

• The argument that, for many African communities, access to reliable electricity remains an immediate priority, alongside the transition to cleaner energy.

EVENT RECAP | NET ZERO AND BEYOND 🌍⚡

Last Thursday, 27 August, G-SEL Network brought together leaders, experts, partners and changemakers at the University of Westminster for our August Pre-Conference, “Net Zero and Beyond: Shaping Futures of Energy Systems.”

From traditional energy and CCUS to renewable energy, finance and academia, the event created a powerful space for meaningful conversations, questions, knowledge-sharing and new perspectives on the future of energy in Africa and the Global South.

The message was clear: we need more partnerships, more investment and more bankable projects.

It is time to move the conversation from aid to agency and ensure that Africa and the Global South are not just part of the energy transition, but are actively shaping it.

A big thank you to the University of Westminster for hosting us, and to our speakers, partners, participants and everyone who contributed to making this conversation impactful.

The event may be over. The work continues.
