On International Literacy Day, we're taking a closer look at a term that gets used a lot - financial literacy. What does it actually mean in practice?
We see financial literacy as the starting point - the basic knowledge of financial terms and vocabulary, things like interest rate, credit score, direct debit.
But knowing the words isn't the same as knowing what to do with them. We call that next step financial fluency.
Fluency is reading your payslip and knowing what it means for this month's budget, then adapting as needed. It's understanding the implications of terms like ‘APR’ or ‘repayment period’ and using them to make informed decisions.
Financial fluency isn't about being an expert. It's about having the confidence to ask the right questions, spot the wrong deal, and make decisions that hold up under the real pressures of life like rising costs, a first job, moving house, and everything in between.
We believe the language of money is a language for life, and everyone deserves to be fluent, no matter where they started.
