Modernization, Modernity and Decoloniality in Central Asia
Date: 06.04.2024
Place: Almaty, Hotel Kazakhstan
Begins at 14:00
Over the past 100 years, Central Asia has twice faced the need to modernize in the shortest possible time. However, the experiences of both Soviet and capitalist development brought by two empires can hardly be deemed successful. They failed to modernize Central Asian societies to the extent necessary to ensure complex economies and high levels of social equality. But does this indicate the inadequacy of the principles of modernization themselves? We will discuss the problems that Central Asian states have faced in the course of modernization, and also touch upon alternative development scenarios that are being implemented in South Asia.
Participants
Rochana Bajpai – professor, Department of Politics and International Studies at SOAS University of London
Bhavna Dave – Senior Lecturer in Politics of Central Asia, Department of Politics and International Studies at SOAS University of London
