Professor Roshini Kempadoo and Dr Lucy Reynolds, researchers at our Centre for Research and Education in Arts and Media, are part of an exhibition at the Tate Britain called Women in Revolt: Art and Activism in the UK 1970-1990, which runs until April before starting a UK tour! ✨

This is the first major survey of feminist art in a major national gallery, exhibiting the art of over 100 women artists and collectives working in the UK 👏

The exhibition presents work by artists who were both shaped by and who vocally contributed to the women’s liberation movement in the UK from the late 1960s. Across six galleries, artists captured activism and protest against systemic inequality against women evoked through disobedient and unruly acts, anger, irony and humour as well as expressions of optimism and hope for a more radical and just society 🙌

Women in Revolt: Art and Activism in the UK 1970-1990 runs at Tate Britain until 7 April 2024. The exhibition will then tour to the National Galleries of Scotland: Modern, Edinburgh, and to The Whitworth at The University of Manchester 💫

We celebrated Lunar New Year with a variety of World in Westminster Cafes across our campuses, honouring its rich traditions and fostering a sense of unity and inclusivity across our diverse community! 🎉🧧

On 10 February our Regent Street Campus was adorned with festive decorations and filled with the joyful sounds of celebration as it welcomed the first day of the Lunar New Year. We held a calligraphy workshop which provided a serene space for our students and guests to explore the art of traditional Chinese writing, deepening their cultural understanding and appreciation. There was also a captivating Lion Dance performance which symbolised the ushering in of prosperity and good fortune for the Year of the Dragon 🐲

The festivities continued at our Harrow Campus on 13 February, where an overwhelming turnout of students, colleagues and guests embraced the spirit of the Lunar New Year. The dynamic Lion Dance performance captivated the audience as well as the vibrant workshop provided by the Chinese Society. The heartfelt speeches from Vice-Chancellor and President Professor Peter Bonfield, Professor Anastasios Maragiannis, Associate Head of the College of Design, Creative and Digital Industries, Head of School in Westminster School of Media and Communications, Michaela O’Brien and other faculty members emphasised the importance of cultural diversity and inclusivity within our community 💛

Beyond the festivities, the Lunar New Year events provided an opportunity for our students and colleagues to come together and celebrate a shared cultural heritage of diversity from around the world. These gatherings exemplified the spirit of unity and cooperation that defines our Westminster community, fostering meaningful connections and friendships ✨

We are excited to announce that we are one of three locations to host this summer’s Digital Schoolhouse’s Festival of Play, a creative career and computing conference for students aged 9-14! 🎉

Returning for its third year, the Festival of Play, a fun-filled creative careers and computing conference in association with EA - Electronic Arts and Northern Ireland Screen, will expand further than before, hosting for the first time at three universities across the UK, coming to our university in July 👏

The events will educate and empower young learners, allowing them to get closer to the technology used to make video games and to spark their interest in STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Maths) subjects. Pupils will hear from and meet people who work in the video games industry, encouraging them to think about how the skills and interests they have today can match up with the careers they may grow into in the future ✨

Festival of Play also recruits university student volunteers, providing them with an invaluable opportunity to network and learn from the attending video games companies and industry professionals 💛

Our students joined Mykaell Riley, Reader, Director for the The Black Music Research Unit /University of Westminster and Principal Investigator for Bass Culture Research at our university, to produce the music for a new BBC Three series, Boarders, created by award winning writer, Daniel Lawrence Taylor 💛

The BBC Three series Boarders follows five talented under privileged Black students from inner-city London as they gain scholarships at St. Gilberts, an elite boarding school. It is a high energy, coming of age comedy drama following a problematic viral video involving a student. The leads are offered sixth form scholarships to St Gilbert’s in an attempt to rehabilitate the image of one of the country’s oldest and most prestigious schools ✨

Mykaell Riley was the Musical Director for the series and invited our students to join the team to create the soundtrack to the new show. Our students brought a diverse mix of talents and musical perspectives, with a mix of male and female song writers, vocalists, rappers and programmers getting involved. The group got the chance to use a range of technology from Logic Pro, Final Cut Pro, Vimeo and Adobe Premiere to create the soundtrack to the show 🙌

Through the experience, our students also got the chance to face real-life challenges of creating a TV soundtrack, with students at one point contributing from New York, Italy and the UK to hit deadlines over the Christmas holidays 👏
