I am so sad to hear of the passing of wonderful singer and harpist Moya Brennan of the beautiful and inspirational Clannad. I had the privilege of hearing her at the Albert Hall in the 90s and in recent years in Oxford and her haunting voice and wonderful music have been an inspiration to me for many many years…A Very sad day…

So sad to hear that the wonderful Cleo Laine has gone to Singers’ Heaven, I had the privilege of meeting her backstage once…a treat! A voice of such warmth, resonance and extraordinary range….always remembered.

"I came along with a contralto voice…" Dame Cleo Laine told the BBC in 2018,"...and that was the rarity of it all."

Farewell to the only female singer to be nominated for a Grammy Award in Jazz, Classical and Pop. Dame Cleo Laine has died at the age of 97. The Sunday Times once described her as "quite simply the best singer in the world."

The renowned British jazz singer, who became a friend to Ella Fitzgerald, was beloved for her 'vocalese' (s**t) singing, and performed at the BBC Proms many times, including a 2007 concert celebrating her and husband John Dankworth's 80th birthdays. Dame Cleo auditioned for the Johnny Dankworth Seven in 1951, wearing a fur coat in the heat of summer. "I think she's got something", said Dankworth, to which trumpeter Jimmy Deuchar replied, "She's got everything."

So excited to be kicking off our Singing to Your Sofa concert series on Zoom - a showcase of our singers with a spotlight on Judith Tregartha, a wonderful soprano who will perform ‘A Song at Twilight’….a beautiful short programme of songs that evoke a nostalgic journey into the heart of home music-making.

A world before television, when voices gathered around the piano and melodies lingered long after the final note.

My fave opera premiered 80 years ago….a story of isolation, human complexity and yet at times hope and how easy it is to alienate those we don’t understand….the score by Britten sublime. I was lucky enough to see the great Jon Vickers in the role at ROH…unforgettable!

My fave singer Kiri…..she explains very well how singers do not stop attending their singing lessons….even into stardom…ha ha especially into stardom!

Last year on her 80th birthday, Dame Kiri Te Kanawa told us about becoming a Royal Opera House sensation, and the career-altering advice she had from her singing teacher. Happy birthday, Dame Kiri!
