Dulwich Picture Gallery is the world’s first purpose-built public art gallery: it was founded in 1811 when Sir Francis Bourgeois RA bequeathed his collection of old masters “for the inspection of the public”. Today the Gallery is a vibrant cultural hub hosting some of the UK’s leading exhibitions alongside its Permanent Collection of Baroque masterpieces while staging a wide-ranging programme of public events, practical art and community engagement.

One year ago today, Her Majesty Queen Camilla officially opened our ArtPlay Pavilion and Sculpture Garden, marking an exciting new chapter for the Gallery.

Since then, more than 35,000 children have played, created and explored in ArtPlay, while school visits have increased by 60%, helping even more young people connect with art and creativity.

We're grateful to the brilliant teams who helped bring this vision to life: architects Carmody Groarke, builders 8Build, and design studio Hold Art Collective. This wouldn't have been possible without our generous supporters including The Lovington Foundation, the Julia Rausing Trust, the Manton Foundation, The National Lottery Heritage Fund, and the Wolfson Foundation. Thank you to them and the many others who made this dream a reality.

Our free-to-access Sculpture Garden continues to inspire visitors every day, featuring works by Amy Stephens, Kim Wilkie, Laura Ford, Laura Ellen Bacon, Conrad Shawcross, Tai Shani, Harold Offeh, Li Li Ren, Nika Neelova, Rob and Nick Carter, Peter Randall-Page and Makiko Harris.

Thank you to everyone who has filled our new spaces with imagination, curiosity, and joy over the last year. Here's to many more creative adventures ahead.

Join the team at Dulwich Picture Gallery and help deliver great food in our busy onsite café.

We're looking for an experienced Chef who takes real pride in their work, enjoys being part of a team and can maintain high standards during busy service. This daytime-only role involves preparing fresh food for Gallery visitors, families and the local community, alongside catering for children's parties and special events.

Can you spot a famous name in our 1899 Visitor Book? 👀

Clue - this person's New York home became a museum giving public access to their extensive art collection in 1935.

Found it? Towards the bottom of the page you will find the signature 'H C Frick, Pittsburg'.

Henry Clay Frick was an American industrialist, financier, and one of the great art collectors of his day. He visited Dulwich Picture Gallery on this day in 1899. After the death of his wife Adelaide in 1931, their Fifth Avenue mansion became The Frick Collection (opening in 1935).

Frick was just beginning to collect seriously in the 1890s… so who knows? Perhaps his visit to Dulwich helped shape the masterpieces he went on to acquire.
