Invitation to a talk!

As part of our Twilight Tuesday sessions, we are pleased to invite you to the lecture Honour Based Violence (HBV) and its intersections, by Dr Savin Bapir-Tardy from the School of Human and Social Sciences.

The lecture is open to all and will take place on Tuesday 30th October at 5pm in G03 between 5 and 6pm. For more information and/or book your place, please click on the link below:

https://www.eventbrite.com/e/honour-based-violence-hbv-and-its-intersections-by-dr-savin-bapir-tardy-tickets-51198478026

Abstract:

In recent years, Honour-based violence (HBV) has been at the centre of many public and academic debates. A mutual agreement in these debates is that HBV is complex in nature and need to be treated as an intersectional phenomenon, combining culture, gender and migration. One of the complexities of HBV is that it does not consist of a single crime, but of multiple types of crimes that fall under its umbrella. Current interventions in combating HBV are in their infancy, which mirrors the lack of local and national statistics assessing the scale of HBV (including in the UK).

This presentation will focus on HBV from a mental health perspective and explore the psychological and practical issues faced by women who experience HBV. The talk will also consider the overlapping similarities between domestic violence and HBV and highlight the features that differentiate HBV from traditional constructs of violence against women. The challenges faced by front-line workers who deal with victims of HBV will also be discussed.
