TEFL non-zero-sum scoring concept.

Purpose: 1) to encourage language production
2) to discourage negative judgment
3) to take advantage of competitive tendencies

Students start with 30 points each (arbitrary) at the start of the activity/session.
Points can be gained by contextually correct target language production (spelling, grammar, pronunciation, vocabulary etc).
Points cannot be lost by incorrect target language production.
Points can be doubled by use of appropriate metaphors or jokes or idioms.
Points should not be removed, instead a penalty of turn missing might better serve the stated purpose.

Points may be realia such as cards, balls or edibles.

This reward concept when positively guided could incentivize resistive students, who may be shy of attention or fearful of ridicule or negative feedback. This would be ideal for intra/inter team work.

Traditional grammar insists on 'Eight parts of Speech'.

1. Noun
2. Pronoun
3. Adjective
4. Preposition

5. Verb
6. Adverb

7. Conjunction
8. Interjection

In the English language there are difficulties in placing a word in one of the eight categories. Usually due to the word form not conforming to rules such as -ly endings for adverbs.

For example the word 'fast' ...

Noun "The fast will last eight days."
Verb "I want to fast!"
Adverb "Run fast!"
Adjective "A fast runner!"

My solution for these problems is to consider each part of speech as a job in the sentence. Then we can analyse a word looking not only at form and position but also at its job: at the work it does in the sentence. This way we can forego lengthy explanations as to why declension and agreement do not conform .
