1-54 Contemporary African Art Fair Next edition: 1-54 London 2026,
15-18 October 2026

A reference to fifty-four countries that constitute the African continent, the title of 1-54 establishes the parameters of the fair’s ethos: as a platform that strives to represent multiplicity and showcase the diversity of contemporary African art and cultural production on an international stage.

1-54 was initiated by Touria El Glaoui in 2013 in London, the first edition of 1-54 in New York was held in 2015 and 1-54 Marrakech will be launched in February 2018.

1-54 is accompanied by an educational and artistic programme and includes lectures, film screenings and panel debates featuring leading international curators, artists and art experts.

Founded by Fabienne Leclerc in 2001, In Situ began in the 13th arrondissement of Paris alongside a group of galleries in the rue Louise Weiss. Since its establishment, the gallery has found homes in many districts of Paris but has been settled in its current location since October 2019. 

As a founding gallery of the Komunuma project in the Grand Paris suburbs, In Situ - fabienne leclerc joined a number of esteemed galleries with diverse public and private interests in contemporary art, and moved into 500 square meters of newly renovated historic industrial spaces. 

The ambition of the gallery is to promote young and emerging artists on the French and international art scene, and to support established artists in the long term. In Situ - fabienne leclerc strives to promote the work of its artists in the gallery, in fairs, and biennials throughout the world, as well as in museums and institutions.

Gillian Jason Gallery works with female-identifying artists from across the generations to present engaging exhibitions about the most resonant ideas of our time. A combination of attuned cultural consciousness, people-first relationships, and a 40-year history of exhibiting work by pioneering artists, makes GJG a go-to reference point for those looking to support and collect art from beyond the white male canon that addresses today’s critical shifts.
 
The development of the gallery runs parallel with that of modern feminism, a correlation that’s never far from curatorial considerations at GJG. As contemporary feminism progresses with increasingly inclusive awareness, the team continues to explore and evolve its own conceptions around what is most salient in art by women.

Founded in 2011 by artist and curator Mohamed Talaat, Gallery Misr is a leading platform for modern and contemporary Arab art based in Cairo, Egypt. The gallery is dedicated to supporting and promoting established and emerging voices from the region, fostering dialogue between local artistic practices and international audiences. Its programme spans painting, sculpture, installation, photography, and multidisciplinary practices, representing artists including Serwan Baran, Aliaa Elgready, Mahmoud Obaidi, Ghadah Alkandari, Medhat Shafik, Souad Abdelrasoul, and Adel Elsiwi. 

Gallery Misr has organised several significant exhibitions such as Arab Dialogue at the Cairo Citadel and Hunna, a collective exhibition of women artists in Saudi Arabia. Misr has also participated in many international projects, including Art Dubai, Abu Dhabi Art, 1-54 Contemporary African Art Fair in London, Riyadh Art Week, Art Basel Qatar, as well as numerous other international collaborations.

Gallery Brulhart was established in 2021 and is dedicated to the promotion of contemporary African art created by women. The gallery takes a clear feminist approach through both solo and group exhibitions, exclusively showcasing African and Afro-descendant women artists. Our mission is to highlight contemporary African art as a vital and creative form of expression, encouraging audiences to engage with complex issues related to politics, history, identity, and the environment from the enlightened and critical perspective of African women.

Gallery Brulhart has worked with over 30 artists from the African continent and diaspora, including emerging artists and established ones such as Kiné Aw, Willys Kezi Niangi, and Olga Yaméogo. Gallery exhibition highlights include the sculpture ‘colour falls’ by Theresah Ankomah (2022), the video and live performance of Rwandan artists Miziguruka and Bingi (2024), as well as the recent installation of asen in ‘la presence de l’absent’ by Eliane Aïsso (2025).

Active since 2013 in Rome’s historic Jewish Ghetto, Galleria Anna Marra features a minimal, contemporary space that reflects its exhibition proposals. The gallery promotes emerging and mid-career talents through gallery shows, public institution exhibitions, international art fairs, and monographs.

Developed with prominent international curators like Larry Ossei-Mensah, Alessandro Romanini, and Silvia Cirelli, the program balances a strong focus on Italian art with international research. Since 2016, the gallery has expanded its global scope, launching exhibitions dedicated to American artists, followed by extensive focuses on Africa, its diaspora, South America, and the Middle East.

The gallery’s overarching vision is to foster cultural exchange by focusing on artistic expressions that address crucial socio-cultural and geopolitical themes, such as the Black condition and the status of women.

Founded by Marwan Zakhem on Ghana’s Independence Day in 2016, Gallery 1957 is a contemporary art gallery based in both Accra and London, working with African and international artists towards fostering a sustained exchange between African art and wider global contexts. The gallery initially focused on strengthening the visibility of West African artists before expanding its programme to include artists from the Global South and its diasporas. Extending this dialogue and offering artists access to broader international networks, the gallery opened its London space in 2020.

The gallery presents exhibitions and installations that engage with questions of identity, cultural exchange, and social history beyond Western frameworks. Their activities include artist residencies, art fair participation, and publications. Gallery 1957 also organises Accra Cultural Week, an annual programme of exhibitions and talks that highlights Ghana’s contemporary art scene. In 2021, the gallery launched the Yaa Asantewaa Art Prize, supporting female Ghanaian artists across the region.

Led by Carine Biley, FILAFRIQUES is a Black woman-owned gallery dedicated to promoting contemporary African art. Created in response to the urgent questions surrounding cultural identity in an increasingly cosmopolitan world, the gallery is rooted in the founder’s dual Ivorian–French heritage and invites the public to (re)connect with contemporary Africa, its richness, and its diversity.

Their roster brings together artists from different African countries who reappropriate cultural elements to shape their own narratives. In 2025, the gallery strengthened their international presence through their participation at 1-54 in New York and London, as well as at AKAA and MIRA in Paris. Following the opening of their first space in Geneva, FILAFRIQUES is now developing new projects in Abidjan, working towards anchoring the gallery more firmly on the continent. These initiatives will be announced soon.

Founded in 2019 in Lausanne, Fabienne Levy Gallery develops a programme of primarily solo exhibitions, offering artists the opportunity to create not only individual works but also immersive environments that redefine the exhibition experience. Each year, the gallery presents five to six projects, featuring a diverse roster of artists including Norbert Bisky, Alina Frieske, Lucia Hierro, Ekene Emeka-Maduka, Amit Berman, Ben Arpéa, and Adriel Visoto. 

In March 2023, a second space was inaugurated in Geneva. Committed to supporting emerging practices, the gallery initiated Space Invasion in 2020, inviting students from Swiss art schools to engage with the process of exhibition-making in a professional setting. As well as this, in 2024, the gallery launched the Bridge Out residency programme to foster cultural exchange. The opening of a third space in Zurich in 2025 establishes Fabienne Levy as the first gallery in Switzerland to operate three venues across the country.

Founded in 2015 by curator and writer Christine Redfern, ELLEPHANT takes its name from the expression “the elephant in the room,” reflecting its commitment to presenting art that illuminates social, cultural, ecological, and political issues.

Located in the heart of Montreal’s Quartier des Spectacles, ELLEPHANT presents six exhibitions annually alongside public programmes, performances, publications, and international art fairs.

Focused on inclusive, post-colonial, feminist, ecological, and technologically engaged practices, ELLEPHANT works closely with artists to develop opportunities through exhibitions, biennials, institutional partnerships, and art fairs.

ELLEPHANT has placed works by their artists in major public and private collections, including the National Gallery of Canada, the Musée d’art contemporain de Montréal, the Smithsonian Institution, and the Thoma Foundation.
