I learned to sew and crochet as an adult and founded Crafty Kilner in 2013. I sold the items that I made and taught crochet lessons local to my home in London. As a primary school teacher, well used to instructing a room full of 30, my patience, methodical pace and clarity of communication worked well to give people the instruction needed to develop their crochet skills. During the various lockdowns due to the Coronavirus pandemic teachers around the world moved their teaching online. It was then I realised that people CAN learn online and the idea to share my crochet teaching ONLINE was born. My love for teaching and crochet combined. I look forward to sharing this passion with you.

I talk about this a lot - it really helps to chill me out.

Give me a 💜 if crochet chills you out
Give me a 💚 if it is something else (and tell me what it is!)

I learned to crochet when I was on maternity leave with my second child. I was used to being busy as a primary school teacher and even though having my babies was amazing, I didn't really feel like I was doing anything for me. I decided I wanted to use my maternity leave to learn something new. I wasn't sure what - a language, watercolour painting, an instrument, knitting... I decided upon crochet. I wasted hours googling and researching what different terms meant, what was DK and chunky? What hook did I need? Which yarn was best for a blanket? How much would I need? Eventually I learned. I don't want others who are keen to learn to crochet to struggle. I want to accelerate them through the process so they can get to the point of knowing all they need to know to make beautiful things but also to quickly reach the mindful calm that crochet can bring by removing the hurdles.

When I was growing up, my mum made us clothes and bread and all meals from scratch. She knitted and made biscuits and cakes. She was well known for her cakes and curries that she made for our school fetes. She was also a very successful primary school teacher and well loved and respected and I aimed to be just like her. When I became a mum, I decided I wanted to learn how to do some of those things too as I knew how much I had valued it. I'm no good at knitting but I can crochet, make curries and cakes and had a very successful career as a primary school teacher (I left teaching in July 2021) so I guess I have succeeded in learning her mum-skills 😊

Our Story

I learnt to sew and crochet after I had my children. I left a 13 year career in primary school teaching to raise my family and started Crafty Kilner. I now sell the items that I sew and crochet and returned to full time primary school teaching in July 2018.
