👟 “Shoes” or ✍️ “to write”?
In Mandarin, some words sound very similar,
but the meanings are completely different.
「鞋子」
xiézi
shoes
「寫字」
xiězì
to write
One is something you wear on your feet.
The other is writing with a pen.
The difference is not only the tone,
but also the lightness, length and rhythm of the sound.
In 「鞋子」, 「子」 is a neutral tone — light and short.
In 「寫字」, 「字」 is the fourth tone — clear and falling.
That is why Mandarin pronunciation really matters 😂
