❓Can you introduce yourself in Mandarin after just four months? ✨

Learner Spotlight: Tiago 🇵🇹

Tiago is from Portugal and lives in London.
He started learning Mandarin because he hopes to teach in Taiwan one day.

After four months at Play Mandarin, he shared his learning journey — fully in Mandarin. 💛

From saying why he wants to learn Mandarin,
to talking about his love for beef noodle soup,
and even ordering in a restaurant:

“I’d like chopsticks!”

What we love most is seeing his confidence grow.

At the beginning, speaking Mandarin felt a little scary.
Now, Tiago can slowly chat with friends, use Mandarin in daily life, and enjoy the process more and more.

Tiago 來自葡萄牙，目前住在倫敦。
因為未來想去台灣教書，所以開始學中文。

在 Play Mandarin 學了四個月後，
他這次用全中文分享了自己的學習經驗。💛

從自我介紹、分享為什麼想學中文，
到介紹自己最喜歡的牛肉麵，
甚至還可以在餐廳用中文點餐：

最讓我們開心的是，
看到 Tiago 一點一點變得更有自信。

一開始，他不太敢開口說中文。
現在，他已經可以慢慢用中文和朋友聊天，
也能把中文用在日常生活裡。

❓What’s the difference between losing face… and having no shame? 😳

In Mandarin, 臉 (liǎn) means face.

But it can also mean dignity, reputation, or how you are seen by others.

So when we say:

😳 丟臉 (diū liǎn)
to lose face / to feel embarrassed
Example: “That was so embarrassing.”

😎 不要臉 (bú yào liǎn)
shameless / cheeky / having no shame
Example: “You really dare to say that?”

Same 臉 (face),
very different feeling.

One is embarrassment.
The other is… confidence with no brakes 😂

❓「丟臉」和「不要臉」，到底差在哪裡？😳

在中文裡，臉（liǎn） 不只是 face，
也代表面子、尊嚴，還有別人怎麼看你。

所以我們會說：

😳 丟臉（diū liǎn）
意思：覺得尷尬、沒面子
例如：這也太丟臉了吧。

😎 不要臉（bú yào liǎn）
意思：不知羞恥、很厚臉皮
例如：你也太不要臉了吧。

一樣都有「臉」，
但感覺完全不一樣。

一個是尷尬到想躲起來，
一個是厚臉皮到很有勇氣 😂

❓What do Play Mandarin teachers do for team bonding after work? 🎨🍷✨

Most days, our teachers spend their time supporting children with endless patience and creativity.

This time, it was the teachers’ turn to be healed by art a little 🎨

We spent the evening painting London by numbers,
chatting away,
and adding a little “adult magic juice” on the side 🍷

Very quickly, the whole night entered full creative chaos mode 😆

Some went for realism and painted London landmarks with absolute focus.
Some carefully coloured every section like model students.
And some fully embraced abstract art —
by the end of the night, London had somehow become complete artistic chaos 😂

Between the painting, singing and endless conversations,
everyone slowly got to know each other a little more.

And somewhere between the colours and laughter,
team chemistry quietly grew too ✨

Because at Play Mandarin,
team bonding is never just Team Building.

It becomes Team Painting, Team Bonding,
and a tiny little healing moment for our teachers too 🎨🍷✨

❓下班後的玩中文老師們，團建玩什麼呢？🎨🍷✨

平常老師們用滿滿的耐心和創意陪伴孩子，
這一次，換老師們被藝術療癒一下。

我們按照數字為倫敦上色，
一邊畫畫、一邊聊天，
再配上一點「大人的魔法果汁」🍷
整個晚上直接進入微醺創作模式。

有人走寫實派，地標畫得超認真；
有人按部就班，每一格都穩穩上色；
也有人直接開啟抽象派模式——
畫到最後，倫敦都變成了「大亂敦」😂

大家一邊創作、一邊唱歌、一邊分享生活，
在笑聲和色彩裡更認識彼此，
也慢慢培養出團隊之間的默契。

因為在玩中文，
團建不只是 Team Building，
也是 Team Painting、Team Bonding，
更是老師們的療癒小時光 🎨🍷✨

❓Same character, different sound = completely different meaning? 🤯

方便 (fāng biàn) — convenient
便宜 (pián yi) — cheap

Both have 便
Different pronunciation → totally different meaning

Hard to remember?

Here‘s the trick 😆

”Poopoo“ = 大便 (dà biàn)
→ ”big convenience“ 💩

Once you remember biàn this way,
方便 suddenly makes sense!

This is how we teach at Play Mandarin:
