Posted • , we remember and celebrate the life of Nelson Mandela. His immense contribution to bringing Apartheid to an end remains his lasting legacy and a continued source of inspiration across the world.
On 18th July 2018, Rolihlahla Mandela was born.
His political career spanned over 70 years.
His fearless political activities led to numerous arrests, detentions and banning orders, and in 1964, he and his co-defendants in the Rivonia trial were saved from the death sentence owing to a strong legal defence team and fear from the state that hanging Mandela would make him a martyr and cause massive unrest.
Mandela was eventually freed in 1990 after 27 years in jail. He was elected President in 1994.
In 2009, the UN General Assembly declared 18th July . Mandela Day offers a renewed chance to do good in the world, contributing to communities in your preferred way. Plant a tree, donate to a food bank, relieve a neighbour’s loneliness, sign a petition, and act in solidarity with the marginalised. Answer the call.
🖼️ Phoenix, 2024 (created for our brief to BA). Phoenix has chosen to show Nelson Mandela with other formidable South African activists, including Ruth First, Helen Joseph, Steve Biko, Desmond Tutu, Albert Luthuli and Denis Goldberg to celebrate his remarkable spirit of collaboration and unity.

Our third year Illustration and Animation BA students installed and exhibited their work in Cape Town, South Africa! 🤩🎨
In October students and staff went to Cape Town, South Africa, to help prepare for an exhibition to celebrate renowned anti-apartheid activist Leah Tutu’s 90th birthday on 14 October. The artwork was shown in the exhibition space at The Old Granary, the headquarters of the Desmond and Leah Tutu Legacy Foundation.
This opportunity for our students came together as part of our ongoing partnership with The Liliesleaf Trust, a charity working to advance public knowledge of the international movement against apartheid and the contemporary relevance of learning from this heritage.

We thought it would be nice to start sharing some of the work/projects created via our in-house agency, HyperStudio ✨. HyperStudio works on design, publishing, illustration & animation live projects and gets paid work for our current and recent Visual Communication graduates. We facilitate the opportunity for these students or graduates to work on live projects whilst also getting support from our creative consultants and importantly our Hyper Studio Project Manager 😎
Here is one of our first ever projects where we commissioned our (at that time recent) graduates & 👏to create a unique roundel logo for our Visual Communication Course. This has since appeared everywhere we do, including on some totebags!
