Moving to the UK is about much more than learning English.
Many teenagers discover that even with a good level of English, understanding British peers can be challenging. Slang, humour, politeness, social expectations, and the unwritten rules of communication can make it difficult to feel confident, build friendships, and fully integrate into everyday life.
Join our interactive session where we will explore:

• How to recognise and respond to teasing, exclusion, or uncomfortable situations

Many parents genuinely want to help their child succeed in the 11+ and invest significant time and effort in preparation. However, some of the most common mistakes happen with the best intentions — and can quietly impact results.

One of the biggest mistakes is focusing solely on knowledge rather than exam technique. A child may have strong English or Maths skills but still lose marks because they are unfamiliar with the format, question types, or expectations of the exam.

Another common mistake is underestimating the importance of timed practice. In the 11+, success is often not about ability alone, but about working accurately under pressure. Without regular exposure to timed tasks, even capable students can struggle to complete papers effectively.

Many families also rely on inconsistent or unstructured preparation. A little grammar one day, vocabulary the next, followed by occasional practice papers, can leave gaps in both knowledge and confidence. Strong results usually come from a clear, structured approach that builds skills progressively over time.

Finally, it is easy to assume that more preparation is always better. In reality, too many lessons, resources, or last-minute activities can increase stress and reduce confidence rather than improve performance.

At Mug.Up Language Studio, our Year 5 Summer Intensive Programme combines structured preparation, weekly mock examinations, and targeted support in English, Mathematics and Reasoning. Students develop exam confidence, improve time-management skills, and become familiar with the format and expectations of competitive school entrance exams.

Designed with bilingual and English as an Additional Language learners in mind, the programme supports children who speak more than one language and may be adapting to the British education system. Alongside academic preparation, students build the confidence, vocabulary and exam skills needed to approach the 11+ with clarity, resilience and purpose.
