Abstract and concrete Thinking sit on opposite side of each other on the systems thinking. You can even argue both are creative or logical thinking styles at the same time.
_
In abstract thinking, you generalise reality in terms of formulas, analogies, relationships, concepts and ideas which then you can use to predict the future. In doing so, you go deep in each concept to understand the underlying mechanisms.
_
For example, Newton’s laws of motion were derived using this thinking style by observing how objects behave when they move. You can now use these laws to predict the landing spot of a ball when you throw it in the air.
_
This is the dominant thinking style of scientists and mathematicians as they use it significantly throughout their career.
_
On the other hand, in concrete thinking style you zero on practicality. Instead of focusing on ideas and concepts, you consider the details that represent reality as close as possible.
_
In this mode of thinking, you are only concerned with the application of ideas and concepts derived by abstract thinking in solving your real physical problems.
_
You try to visualise your solution and reason objectively if a solution will work in your situation.
_
For example, you want to have better conversations. So, while you're doing some research, you come across a concept – that you need to ask open-ended questions to keep the conversation flowing. When you start thinking to yourself what these “open” questions might be in a “real” conversation, you are exercising concrete thinking.
_
This is the dominant thinking style of engineers and programmers who apply concepts derived by abstract thinking to solve a real physical problem. For example, when they use formulas to design and programme a 733 kg car to handle 93-degree corners at 123 mph.
_
Think about both thinking styles... Can you see how both go hand in hand to help you solve even the most challenging problems in your life?

Every day after work, the commute home is killing you and when you’re finally there, you don’t have any energy to do anything at all! Let alone hitting the gym or working on a side hustle.
_
All you want to do is turn on the TV, relax on the couch, and enjoy eating a delicious pasta with a few greens. You start watching a show and before you know it, you’re suddenly 5 episodes in and it’s 1am, way too late to do anything else other than to sleep.
_
Sometimes you just don’t have the time. And, that’s ok.
This is not purely a problem of willpower but rather an issue with managing your daily energy, not your time.

Critical and lateral thinking sit on the opposite sides of each other in the systems thinking wheel. 🎡
--
While critical thinkers look for validity of facts and evaluation of outcomes against a set criteria, lateral thinkers intentionally go the opposite direction. 🔬
--
In lateral thinking (aka outside of the box thinking), you will want to deliberately challenge the existing conditions, rules and the status quo in search for novel solutions to existing or novel problems and vice versa. 🗃
--
Lateral thinking is about application existing technologies in novel ways on problems. Think Uber, Airbnb and Netflix that revolutionised their industries. 🚖 🏘 🎥
--
While you need to be good at lateral thinking to spot opportunities for innovation and entrepreneurship, you also need critical thinking to test your crazy ideas in the real world and remain grounded. 💡
--
Accountants and researchers are masters of critical thinking while management consultants and entrepreneurs are masters of lateral thinking... 🤔

Many believe they're either logical or creative people, but they don't realise they can be both. In fact, most of the complex problems we face cannot be solved being only logical or creative. 🧮🎻
--
Recent neuroscientific studies have found that being left or right brained is a myth! There is no such thing! Any thinking styles you use in your job (creative or logical) are going to engage both regions of your brain 🧠
--
The idea here is you can master both sides of yourself with the right mindset plus relevant and focused training. Learn systems thinking to bring both sides together and be good at painting, music, writing, maths and science at the same time. 🔬 🎨
