Looking back at the last 15 years of exploring spontaneous collective singing and vocal improvisation, I’m filled with gratitude for everyone who has been part of this journey, exchanging, shaping, and exploring together. 🎶✨

I feel incredibly fortunate for my teachers, mentors, colleagues, collaborators, friends, and students.

My dear Iris Guiñazu remains a guide and a constant inspiration.

Thank you to my early singing teachers—Maria Stella Monti, Julio Raggio, and others—and to my guitar teachers Toro Stafforini and Armando de la Vega.

Sheila Jordan and Mark Murphy were precious humans and jazz voice teachers I will always remember. I’m also deeply grateful to Tina May, Rene Marie, and Deborah Brown, and to the Global Music Foundation for the opportunity to learn alongside them.

Thank you to Pandit Ajoy Chakraborty for opening the world of Indian classical music, and to Abdul Salam al Kheir for introducing me to the wonders of classical Arabic singing and oud.

Bobby McFerrin and Rhiannon remain my greatest inspirations in the world of spontaneous singing.

I’m grateful to Roberto Demo, Oskar Boldre, Albert Hera, Roger Treece, Ben Schutz, Camille Pascal, Kees Kool, Charles Raszl, Pete Churchill, and Stephen Keogh for their inspiration, encouragement, trust, and the many opportunities to learn, teach, and grow together. And to all the brilliant musicians I’ve shared stages with, and the entire UK Vocal Improv Collective team—thank you.

Finally, I’m grateful to my dear bandmates in (Jaka Škapin, Kate Smith, Sylvia Schmidt-Silas)—for everything that we have learned, and continue learning, together.

We’re partnering with the Voci Audaci festival and Oskar Boldre on an online symposium happening on July 15 (next Wednesday) at 6.30pm UTC (8.30pm CEST, 2.30pm EDT), amongts an international group of artist facilitators as well as founding members of Bobby’s Voicestra!

We are immersed in a new musical and social phenomenon. In 40 years, circlesinging has expanded considerably and is becoming a real “new tool” for bringing people together and promoting integration, encouraging a sense of community, as well as being a collective expression tool with short and long-term benefits. Especially in the last two decades, practices have emerged that are gradually transforming Circlesongs. This growth definitely shows that the movement is expanding and thriving. The symposium aims to create discussion and dialogue between different generations of Circlesongs leaders by asking crucial questions, including:

• How could this practice evolve in the coming decades?

• What opportunities are opening up and what risks or challenges require our attention?

• What does it mean for music to be at the centre of the circle?

• Is music the means or the goal? In other words, do we all serve music to lift our spirits, or do we use music as a tool to build relationships?
