John Newnham Selective Secondary School
From 1951 - 1987. John Newnham School was located on Selsdon Park Road, South Croydon.
The school opened in 1951 as a Secondary Selective, became a comprehensive in 1971 and was then closed in 1987 as a result of reduced student numbers in Croydon. The John Newnham building was used for a while for training and as offices but was subsequently refurbished and reopened to house the John Ruskin College. The school was named after the local dignitary John Montague Newnham who was the first ever chairman of the Borough's Education Committee.
Terry Morris writes:
60 years ago this week my classmates and I of 5c were just beginning our last year to leave in 1964, although a few carried on to 1965. Our 5c was much like the 5c in tv series Please Sir.
Our last reunion was 25 years ago and we are all 75 now and some will be 76 shortly. I would like to reach out to all those who have survived and share good memories of those who sadly haven’t and hopefully a reunion next summer.

Barry Nelms:
School play Christmas 63. Anyone in this group? I was Roman soldier number 1. A good bit of typecasting as I joined the Royal Marines and served for 23 years.

One of our most famous pupils Kirsty MacColl has a bench here on Soho Square Garden. The plaque commemorates her and the lyrics to her song "Soho Square".

Happy Christmas to all former pupils - in the year we lost our biggest contributor, here's one of Nick's festive pictures again.

Yesterday was Nick Anderson’s funeral at Wouldham All Saints 11th century church, followed by a gathering of 20-30 friends at The Bull Inn, West Malling – one of Nick’s regular pubs. Nick’s good friend David Barton organised the day and we both read some words we had prepared at the service.
Afterwards, I was pleased to be able to meet Nick’s two sisters & his ex-wife. Nick and I’s mutual Rowdown School friend Phil Villiers also prepared some words, which I read out at The Bull.
There we enjoyed a nice buffet, and we were reminded of the many strings Nick had to his bow: Scout Leader; working in a Gun Shop, Game Shoot owner; Gamekeeper and a degree in Pest Control from Birmingham University. He was an intellectual and incredibly well-read with an amazing ability to retain details.
Amongst Nick’s belongings, David found a 40-year-old Jeroboam (300cl) of Chateau Rauzan Gassies. This was strained to remove the sediment and decanted for all to enjoy – cheers Nick, I’m sure you would have wanted us to enjoy it for you.
