🌱 Starting composting can be confusing - which compost bin to choose, getting the right mix, avoiding pests... but with a bit of advice and demonstration from those already doing it, you'll find composting is easier than you think.

That's why ELWA and East Barking Horticultural Association are launching a brand new Compost Learning Zone, featuring many kinds of compost bins, where they'll host free composting workshops for residents, groups and organisations👩‍🌾

Join us on 23rd August in Gale Street, Becontree, to launch the new space and join the first How To Compost workshop. Make 2026 the year you started composting! 🏡

Free entry, but advance booking for non-allotment members is essential 👉 www.eastlondonwaste.gov.uk/whatson

**Notice: event postponed due to amber extreme heat warning** ☀️🚨
Sadly, we're have postponed the HypnoCube event tomorrow in Dagenham, due to the predicted extreme temperatures. We were due to be outside Becontree Heath Leisure Centre with our excellent interactive cube, but the outdoor location and high temperatures means this could be unsafe for our staff and any attendees.
We're very sorry for any disappointment caused - the event will be rearranged for a new date as soon as possible.
🔋You can visit our 2 other planned HypnoCube events - check our events listing for details👉www.eastlondonwaste.gov.uk/whatson

Ever wondered the difference between Recycle For Your Community and East London Waste Authority?

Well, Recycle For Your Community was the previous name for our Waste Prevention Programme, when it was previously run by Keep Britain Tidy. ELWA have since taken the programme in house, and we think it's time for a name change on Facebook!

Nothing else is changing over here - we'll be running the same projects and events as usual…just with a name that reflects who we are now 🙂

At Community Repair you’ll work one-on-one with a Fixing Factory Fixer to inspect, diagnose, and repair your beloved item.

No prior experience is needed, but a curiosity and willingness to learn is essential.

..and over at Barking Learning Centre, just a short walk from the Shopping Centre, you'll find an Electrical Recycling point.

Introducing...the HypnoCube! Back in January we teamed up with Material Focus to launch a design competition calling out to artists, makers, and creative organisations to submit proposals for a bold, engaging, and educational public installation ✨

We received fantastic submissions from many talented designers, with the winners .cycle.uk chosen commissioned to build their design. The giant cube, featuring carnival style games and the popular mascot HypnoCat, is a playful reminder to never bin batteries or electricals - they can get crushed in bin and recycling lorries and spark fires 🔥🪫

Yesterday, the 'HypnoCube' embarked on a tour through the boroughs of Barking & Dagenham, Havering, Newham, and Redbridge - starting at the Greener Together Family Learning Day in South Park Ilford. Find out where we're headed next: www.eastlondonwaste.gov.uk/whatson 🩷💙

👶Make sure you have enough fresh fruit to last you the summer!
🍓 Store strawberries (or any berry) in a clean and dry, washed-out jam jar to keep them fresher for longer.
💦 Wash your strawberries just before you want to eat them (not when adding to the jar) to help them keep for even longer.

If you’ve got any great storage tips, send us a message. If you want more great ideas to make the most of your food, sign up to the free 5-week newsletter from our website at https://eastlondonwaste.gov.uk/foodwaste
