During HIIT you are in an anaerobic state which converts to your adenosine triphosphate and phosphocreatine ATP energy system very quickly requiring little oxygen and producing explosive power, this system doesnt produce energy for long. During LISS you are in an aerobic state, requiring a lot more oxygen supplying you with energy for longer via a slower releasing of ATP.
