A taste of home ๐Ÿก๐Ÿ’›

This young person joined his fostering household just under two weeks ago and is already beginning to feel comfortable and settled.

Last night, he volunteered to prepare dinner for the whole household, proudly sharing his culinary skills and making a delicious Libyan-style pasta dish. ๐Ÿ๐Ÿ‘จโ€๐Ÿณ๐Ÿ‡ฑ๐Ÿ‡พ

Food can be a powerful way for children and young people to celebrate their culture, share their identity and build connections within their fostering family.

Swipe to try our Libyan-style one-pot pasta recipe, inspired by his wonderful meal! โžก๏ธ

๐Ÿ’œ Your Rights. Your Voice. Your Future.

Being in foster care does not take away your rights. You have the right to feel safe, be listened to, understand decisions about your life, have your culture and identity respected, stay connected with people who matter to you, and speak up when something doesnโ€™t feel right.

You can also ask for an **Independent Advocate** โ€” someone whose role is to help make sure your views are heard. If youโ€™re unhappy about a decision or how youโ€™re being treated, you have the right to ask questions, request support or make a complaint.

At Silver Lining Fostering, we want every child and young person to know:

๐Ÿ—ฃ๏ธ **Your voice matters.**
๐Ÿ’œ **Your rights matter.**

๐Ÿง  Mental Health Matters

Everyone has mental health, just as everyone has physical health. Sometimes you may feel worried, sad, angry, overwhelmed or simply not like yourself, and talking about how you feel can be an important first step.

Look out for changes such as feeling low for a long time, losing interest in things you normally enjoy, difficulty sleeping or concentrating, or withdrawing from friends and family.

Small things can help: talk to someone you trust, stay connected with people who support you, get enough rest, spend time outdoors and make time for activities you enjoy.

You do not have to manage difficult feelings alone. Speak to your foster carer, social worker, Silver Lining staff or another trusted adult.

๐Ÿ“ฑ Online Safety โ€“ Stay Smart. Stay Safe.

The internet can be a great place to learn, connect with friends and have fun, but itโ€™s important to know how to protect yourself online.

Keep personal information such as your address, school, passwords and location private. Think carefully before posting or sending photos, videos or messages, as content can be difficult to remove once it has been shared.

Be cautious of people you donโ€™t know online, fake profiles, unexpected gifts or money, and anyone asking you to keep conversations secret. If someone pressures, threatens or makes you feel uncomfortable, stop the conversation and tell someone you trust.

Remember, you can always speak to your foster carer, social worker or Silver Lining staff if something online is worrying you.

๐Ÿ›ก๏ธ Radicalisation: Itโ€™s Okay to Ask for Help

Radicalisation can happen online or in person, and it isnโ€™t always easy to recognise. Children and young people may be exposed to extremist views, hate, discrimination or pressure through social media, online communities or people around them.

๐Ÿ’™ The most important message is: you are not alone.

If something you see, hear or experience makes you uncomfortable, worried or pressured, speak to someone you trust. Asking for help can protect you and others.

At Silver Lining Fostering, we encourage our young people and foster families to stay curious, speak openly and know where to turn when something doesnโ€™t feel right.

๐Ÿ’™ Bullying is Not Okay

Everyone deserves to feel safe, respected and included. Bullying can happen at school, at home, in the community or online, and it can include name-calling, threats, exclusion, rumours, physical harm or hurtful messages.

If youโ€™re experiencing bullying, remember that you donโ€™t have to deal with it alone. Speak to someone you trust, save evidence of online bullying, block and report harmful accounts, and stay connected with people who support you.

If you see someone else being bullied, donโ€™t join in. Being a friend, speaking up when it is safe and telling a trusted adult can make a real difference.

๐Ÿ’™๐Ÿ’— Mental Health & Wellness Training ๐Ÿ’—๐Ÿ’™

Today we brought together foster carers from Birmingham and London for an engaging Mental Health & Wellness training session focused on something incredibly important โ€” **looking after ourselves while caring for others.๐ŸŒฟ

Our carers openly shared some of the everyday challenges they experience, from supporting children who may resist help, managing social media and food-related concerns, to keeping up with recordings, chasing professionals and supporting children who test boundaries.

The session was a valuable opportunity to reflect, share experiences and remind one another of the importance of having a strong support network, asking for help when needed and making time for our own emotional wellbeing. ๐Ÿ’™

A huge thank you to the facilitator, Bernadette, for delivering such a warm, insightful and engaging session. Your knowledge, compassion and dedication created a safe space where carers could speak openly and learn from one another. ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ’

And thank you to all our foster carers who participated and shared their experiences so honestly.

โœจ You canโ€™t pour from an empty cup. Take care of you, so you can keep changing lives.

๐ŸŒŸ Childrenโ€™s Support Group โ€“ Cannon Hill Park ๐ŸŒŸ

We had a fantastic Childrenโ€™s Support Group at Cannon Hill Park, with young people joining us! ๐Ÿ˜Š

โšฝ The teenage boys showed off their football skills, while the younger children enjoyed getting creative with arts and crafts ๐ŸŽจโœ‚๏ธ.

When the rain made a surprise appearance, we headed indoors to the Midlands Arts Centre, where we explored an art exhibition.

๐Ÿค“ And now for a *Fun Fact of the Day*โ€ฆ

One of the chairs featured in the exhibition had been designed using stickers by two of the young people who attended our group! They were incredibly proud to show us their work, and it was fantastic to see their creativity on display ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿฝโœจ.

We then enjoyed lunch together ๐Ÿ• before Bernadette, Zenab and Stacey led an activity where the young people developed questions for prospective foster carers.

๐Ÿ’ญ๐Ÿ—ฃ๏ธ It was wonderful to hear their ideas, perspectives and experiencesโ€”and to give young people a genuine opportunity to have their voices heard and help shape the fostering process.

At Silver Lining Fostering, childrenโ€™s voices matter. ๐Ÿ’›

๐ŸŽ“ GCSE Results Day 2026! ๐ŸŽ“

Today is a big day for young people across the country as they receive their GCSE results โ€” and for foster carers, itโ€™s a day to celebrate the young people we support and the journey theyโ€™ve been on. ๐Ÿ’›

Whether the results are exactly what they hoped for, better than expected, or not quite what they wanted, every young person deserves to feel proud of how far theyโ€™ve come.

For some of our young people, reaching this milestone may have taken incredible resilience, determination and courage. Results are just one part of their story โ€” they do not define their potential or their future. ๐ŸŒŸ

To all our foster carers supporting young people today: thank you for being there through the nerves, the celebrations, the disappointments and everything in between.

Whatever the results, remind them: this is not the end of the journey โ€” itโ€™s the beginning of the next chapter. โค๏ธ
