Dear Foster Carers,

With the temperatures rising this week, please take extra care to keep yourselves and the children safe during the hot weather.

A few important reminders:

* Never leave a child unattended in a car, even for a few minutes. Vehicles can become dangerously hot very quickly.
* Ensure children have regular access to water throughout the day and encourage them to stay hydrated.
* Apply sunscreen regularly and ensure children wear suitable clothing, hats, and seek shade where possible.
* Avoid prolonged outdoor activities during the hottest part of the day.
* Be mindful of children who may struggle to regulate their temperature or communicate discomfort.
* Check bedrooms and living spaces remain well ventilated, particularly overnight.
* Take extra care during trips, outings, and transport arrangements.

If you have any concerns regarding a child’s health or wellbeing during the heat, please seek medical advice where appropriate and inform the agency if needed.

Thank you, as always, for the care and support you provide to our children and young people. Stay safe and keep cool.

Rather than responding punitively, they remain calm, consistent and reflective, recognising behaviour as communication and responding with empathy and curiosity. They provide a safe, predictable and nurturing home environment, which supports the young person to feel secure and valued. The foster carer is attuned to the young person’s emotional needs and is skilled at co-regulating during times of distress, helping the young person to develop their own coping strategies over time. Their approach promotes trust, stability and emotional resilience. The foster carer also demonstrates insight into attachment and the importance of relationship-based care. They invest time in building a secure and trusting relationship, while maintaining clear and appropriate boundaries. They are reflective in their practice, open to professional guidance, and committed to ongoing learning to strengthen their understanding of trauma-informed care. Overall, the foster carer’s strengths lie in their patience, emotional warmth, advocacy and professionalism. Their trauma-informed practice underpins all aspects of their care and has contributed positively to the young person’s stability, progress and overall wellbeing.
