πŸ“š Celebrating a love of reading at Orchard House School

In this National Year of Reading, we’re celebrating our Reading Explorer (KS1) and Reading Scholar (KS2) programmes - designed to encourage our pupils to read widely, discover high-quality literature and develop a genuine love of books.

πŸ”Ž Reading Explorer encourages our younger pupils to choose and explore great books, completing creative activities to earn points and work towards their Explorer badge.

πŸŽ“ Reading Scholar challenges our older pupils to read every day, reflect on their reading and earn points for completing books - with 30 points earning their prestigious Scholar badge, presented by our Head, Mrs Adams.

The success of The Reading Scholar Programme has already led to the introduction of our new Reading Critic, Ambassador and Laureate awards!

Alongside these programmes, our Parent Mystery Readers and older pupils reading with younger children help make reading a joyful part of our school community. ❀️ πŸ“–

Big questions start early at Orchard House. πŸ’‘

Our Reception pupils have been thinking about the questions they'd love to ask their Year 1 teachers next year. From "How did the world begin?" to "How does your brain work?" and "Why did the world start getting polluted?", their curiosity knows no bounds.

Nurturing inquisitive minds and inspiring a lifelong love of learning starts from the very beginning. 🌱 πŸͺ

Growing Change 🌱

Today, we're reflecting on one example of the wonderful learning that has taken place across Orchard House School this past year. πŸŒπŸ’š

Inspired by the book The Last Wolf by Mini Grey, our Year 2 pupils explored deforestation, sustainability and the power of persuasive writing. They wrote thoughtful letters to our Head of School, Mrs Adams, asking her to plant more trees - and their voices were heard.

Thanks to their passion and determination, trees have now been planted both locally, in areas affected by deforestation, and in our very own playground! The children also rolled up their sleeves to grow their own sunflowers and radishes, developing a hands-on appreciation for the natural world and the importance of caring for it.

A wonderful example of learning with purpose, and the positive change that even some of our youngest pupils can inspire. 🌻🌱
