When our children are emotionally dysregulated, it is easy for us to feel overwhelmed as well.
In those challenging moments, one of the most powerful things we can do is pause.
A deep breath creates space between our emotions and our response, helping our body to sense ‘it’s not an emergency’. Rather than reacting from frustration, we can respond with calm, empathy and connection.
Our children learn how to regulate their emotions by watching how we regulate our own. Each time we choose to slow down, we model self-control, resilience and compassion.
If you do lose your patience, offer yourself grace. Repair is more important than perfection. A sincere apology and a commitment to respond more calmly next time can have a profound impact.
Our children do not need perfect parents. They need parents who are willing to reflect, repair and reconnect.
Pause. Breathe. Respond with love. You are doing better than you think.
