Thank you to all our new BSc and MSc students who joined us for our pre-Welcome Games Nights. It was so lovely to meet you all and spend the evening having fun before Welcome officially gets underway.

Another fantastic PhD achievement to celebrate in the Department of Mathematics! 🙌🏼

A huge congratulations to Dr Mahsa Dalirrooyfard on officially being awarded her PhD.

Her thesis, “Strong Orientations, Crossing Families, and Excluded Minors for the Packing Property”, represents the culmination of several years of dedicated research and an important milestone in her academic journey.

We would also like to thank her supervisors, Dr Ahmad Abdi and Professor Bernhard von Stengel, for their guidance and support throughout her doctoral studies.

Mahsa, it has been a pleasure to have you as part of our research community. We wish you every success and happiness in whatever comes next! 🥳

🎉 Exciting News from LSE Mathematics!

We are thrilled to announce that Professor Luitgard Veraart is our new Head of Department!

Luitgard brings an incredible wealth of academic leadership and world-class research expertise to the role. With a PhD in Mathematics from the University of Cambridge, Luitgard's distinguished career includes previous roles at Princeton University's Bendheim Center for Finance and the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology before joining LSE in 2010.

As the co-winner of the prestigious 2019 Adams Prize for achievements in the Mathematics of Networks, Luitgard's cutting-edge research focuses on financial mathematics, risk management, systemic risk in financial networks, energy market modelling, and stochastic volatility. Luitgard also demonstrates global leadership through recent service as Program Director of the SIAM Activity Group on Financial Mathematics and Engineering, alongside editorial roles with several leading mathematical finance journals.

A huge congratulations to Dr Rennie Sun on successfully completing her PhD in Mathematics! 💫

Rennie’s thesis, “Two Topics in Mathematical Finance: Mandate Models and Mean-Variance Hedging”, marks the culmination of years of hard work, dedication and research.

We would also like to thank her supervisors, Professor Johannes Ruf and Professor Luitgard Veraart, for their invaluable guidance and support throughout her PhD journey.

We’re delighted to celebrate this fantastic achievement and wish Rennie every success as she begins her next chapter.

Last week we had the pleasure of hosting our Visiting Fellow, Sujoy Bhore (IIT Bombay) for a fascinating seminar, ‘Algorithms Under Uncertainty: A Magic Wand from Geometry.’

Sujoy explored how online algorithms must make irrevocable decisions as data is revealed over time, and how geometric and metric structure can serve as a ‘magic wand’ for overcoming barriers in classical optimisation problems, from online hitting set and set cover, to online metric embedding and matching.
