Brain imaging studies show structural and functional differences in the brains of dyslexic individuals, particularly in the areas responsible for phonological processing.

This affects the ability to hear, identify and manipulate the individual sounds within words, making it harder to match sounds to letters. And English doesn't make it easy with 26 letters, 44 sounds, almost 250 ways to spell them.

But phonological processing isn't the whole picture. Many dyslexic learners also face challenges with:

Under the Equality Act 2010, schools are legally required to make reasonable adjustments for any child whose learning difficulty has a substantial and long-term effect on their day-to-day life. That covers a lot of children who are still waiting for β€” or may never receive β€” a formal diagnosis.

What you can ask for right now:

βœ… Extra time in class or tests
βœ… Reading and spelling support
βœ… Chunked instructions
βœ… Movement breaks
βœ… Access to assistive technology

When a child says they hate reading, they're usually not talking about books.

They're talking about how reading makes them feel.

Many struggling readers experience frustration, embarrassment, and exhaustion every time they pick up a book. After enough negative experiences, avoiding reading becomes a way to protect themselves from those feelings.

Many people assume writing difficulties are simply about spelling.

In reality, writing is one of the most demanding tasks a child can do.

A child needs to generate ideas, hold them in working memory, organise them into a logical sequence, structure sentences, remember spelling patterns, and physically write, all at the same time.

For children with dyslexia, these processes often require much more effort.
While they're concentrating on spelling a word, they may forget the sentence they were trying to write. While focusing on handwriting, they can lose track of their ideas.

The result can be short sentences, unfinished thoughts, frustration, and a reluctance to write.

This isn't a reflection of intelligence or creativity. In fact, many dyslexic children have wonderful ideas but struggle to get them onto paper.

One of the most effective ways to support writing is through planning.

Using visual organisers, picture prompts, clear writing frameworks, and the 4 Wsβ€”Who, What, When, and Whereβ€”can help reduce the cognitive load and make writing more manageable.
