An incredible achievement by our Operations Director, Wenol Messham, who, alongside Meera, successfully completed the Alzheimer’s Society Trek26 London.

After 26 tough miles, tired legs, and an unforgettable challenge, they crossed the finish line having raised almost 75% of their fundraising target for dementia support and research. An outstanding achievement for such an important cause.

We at The Health & Safety Group could not be prouder of Wenol and Meera for their effort and determination.

The Alzheimer’s Society Trek26 London raises vital funds for Alzheimer’s Society, supporting people living with dementia today while also funding research into earlier diagnosis and treatments that can slow progression. Progress is happening, but only with continued funding.

𝗘𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘆 𝟯 𝗺𝗶𝗻𝘂𝘁𝗲𝘀, someone in the UK develops dementia. Dementia is now the UK’s 𝗯𝗶𝗴𝗴𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝗸𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗿. At the current rate, there will be 𝟭.𝟲 𝗺𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗽𝗲𝗼𝗽𝗹𝗲 living with dementia in the UK by 2040. Unless a cure can be found.

𝗘𝗮𝗿𝗹𝘆 𝗗𝗶𝗮𝗴𝗻𝗼𝘀𝗶𝘀
A nationwide trial is now assessing blood tests that could diagnose Alzheimer’s years earlier, with the potential to reach the NHS within five years. These tests could be groundbreaking because current treatments work best before significant damage is done. Earlier diagnosis means more time, more independence, more life.

𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗦𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗰𝗵 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗮 𝗖𝘂𝗿𝗲
Alzheimer's Research UK is focused on finding a cure through scientific research. They work to understand how dementia develops, detect it earlier, and ultimately prevent it. And real progress is happening... drugs such as lecanemab and donanemab help to slow Alzheimer’s when caught early. The benefits are modest but this is a shift from managing decline to changing the course of the disease.

𝗙𝘂𝗿𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗰𝗵
There are now over 180 clinical trials testing more than 130 potential drugs worldwide, targeting not just symptoms, but the disease itself. Gene therapies are already in clinical trials for certain types of dementia, aiming to halt the disease at its root. Progress is real, but it is expensive. Dementia research takes time and sustained funding to reach patients. History shows us when funding increases, progress accelerates. Cancer survival has doubled in 50 years. HIV is now manageable. Dementia is at that same turning point.

𝗬𝗼𝘂 𝗖𝗮𝗻 𝗛𝗲𝗹𝗽
Whilst a cure is being sought, you can help provide the care to those affected. 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗔𝗹𝘇𝗵𝗲𝗶𝗺𝗲𝗿'𝘀 𝗦𝗼𝗰𝗶𝗲𝘁𝘆 supports people living with dementia through a national dementia support line and local services for diagnosis, care and daily life.

It’s Neurodiversity Celebration Week! 💙🧠

This week celebrates the many ways our brains work and challenges us to remove the barriers that stop people from thriving.

Right now, fewer than 5% of people with a learning disability are in paid employment, even though most want to work and contribute. (nuffieldtrust.org.uk)
