Take 10 minutes to relax and draw a pattern 🖊️

Linda, the leader of Interest Group Online's Zentangle group has shared a simple pattern anyone can try as an introduction to the meditative drawing practice. Here's how to get started:

- To start, you need a piece of paper or card, postcard size is ideal, or smaller, perhaps a 3.5" square, and a pen.
- Draw a simple diamond grid by adding evenly spaced diagonal lines in both directions.
- Pick one diagonal row and draw almond-shaped petals (curved lines connecting each intersection).
- Repeat the same petal shape on every parallel diagonal row until the tile is filled.
- Add a second curved line inside each petal to create a double-lined ribbon effect.
- Now you have your pattern, you can lightly shade one side of each petal to add depth and dimension, or leave it as it is.

If you try it, be sure to share your Zentangle creations with us in the comments ⬇️

Who goes above and beyond at your u3a?

This Volunteers' Week, we're celebrating the thousands of u3a members across the country who give their time and energy running groups, sharing knowledge, running their u3a and supporting others (to name only a few).

So we'd love to know - who are the superstars in your u3a? Shout them out in the comments!

It's Volunteers' Week and as a movement made up of volunteers, we want to say thank you to everyone who contributes at their u3a in ways big and small 🫶

Todmorden u3a member Michael is one of those people - as a volunteer at his local u3a, where he is speaker secretary and deputy Chair as well as helping to run events. In addition, he is a national learning volunteer, helping to run our online events for members across the country. You can read a little bit about what he enjoys about his role below.

If you think you might enjoy getting more involved with your u3a, why not start by asking your committee how you could help?

The deadline is Friday 31 July. The writers of the top three essays will receive books donated by HX Expeditions. Find out how to get involved on our learning pages, https://www.u3a.org.uk/what-we-do/learning/learning-activities/essay-competition-2026

Friday fun: go for a colour walk! 💛💚🩷

Next time you're out for a walk, choose one colour and see how many things you spot in that colour.

Take photos or sketch what you find along the way. Plants, shop signs, a forgotten umbrella - everything counts. You might be surprised what you walk past every day without noticing.

This is a simple way to stay present, sharpen your observation, and reconnect with the world around you. And once you're home, you'll have a beautiful little gallery, whether that's a camera roll or sketchbook page full of colour.

Give it a try this weekend and share your finds with us! 📷🎨
