Natchathiram CIC supports Tamil families of children with special educational needs (SEND) in the UK. We provide culturally sensitive guidance on EHCPs, school support, and parent rights — in both Tamil and English. Our mission is to empower Tamil parents and celebrate the unique brilliance of every child.

One of the biggest mistakes I see?
People assuming all special schools are basically the same.

They’re not.

Different specialist settings are designed for different needs, including:
✔️ Autism
✔️ SEMH (social, emotional & mental health)
✔️ Moderate or severe learning difficulties
✔️ Communication & interaction needs

And the environment matters more than people realise.

A child may struggle in one setting…
and completely thrive in another.

That’s why a diagnosis alone is not enough when deciding placement.

You need to look at:
– sensory needs
– communication style
– emotional regulation
– learning profile
– social presentation
– anxiety levels

The right school is about fit, not labels.

Save this if you’re navigating EHCP or school placement decisions.

Let’s talk about independent (private) SEN schools 👇🏽

Most parents assume this isn’t even an option because of cost.

But here’s what many don’t realise:
If your child has an EHCP, a local authority can fund a place at an independent SEN school.

These settings often provide:
✔️ Highly specialised support
✔️ Smaller, structured environments
✔️ Integrated therapies

But it’s not always straightforward.

These placements are usually:
– not offered upfront
– questioned due to cost
– something parents have to actively request or challenge for

Which means if you don’t know…
you won’t even consider it.

Save this if you’re navigating EHCP decisions.

Let’s talk about special schools 👇🏽

There’s still a lot of stigma around them.
Parents are made to feel like it’s a “last resort” or that they’ve somehow failed.

But here’s the reality:

For many children with SEND, special schools provide:
✔️ Smaller, more supportive environments
✔️ Staff trained to meet specific needs
✔️ Teaching that actually works for them

And often…
it’s the first time a child feels safe, regulated, and able to learn.

The question isn’t:
“Can they cope in mainstream?”

It’s:
“Where will they actually thrive?”

Save this if you’re navigating school decisions right now.

The school placement system wasn’t designed to be easy to navigate. For Tamil families, it’s even harder when everything is in a language that isn’t yours.
This workshop breaks it all down. In Tamil. For free.
We’ll cover:
— The types of placement available (mainstream, specialist unit, special school, independent)
— How placement decisions are actually made, and who holds the power
— Your right to name a school, and where that right has limits
— What to do when you’re refused

This is one of the most overlooked SEN options in the UK 👇🏽

A resource base (or SEN unit) is based within a mainstream school, but offers:
✔️ Smaller, structured classes
✔️ Specialist support
✔️ Opportunities to integrate into mainstream where appropriate

For many children, this can be the best balance.

But here’s what parents aren’t told:
Places are limited.
Access isn’t straightforward.
And if you don’t know it exists, you won’t even ask the question.

This is exactly why so many children stay in the wrong setting for too long.

Save this if you’re navigating SEN decisions right now.

Mainstream schools and SEN support explained 👇🏽
If your child has SEND, you’ve probably been told “they’ll be fine in mainstream.”

But here’s the truth:
Support in mainstream schools is inconsistent.
Some children thrive. Others get ignored, masked, or labelled as “behaviour problems.”

You need to know your rights, your options, and what support should actually look like.

As a SENCO, I see this all the time. Parents wait for the school or the LA to tell them what’s available — and by then, a lot has already been decided.
School placements are one of the most important decisions in your child’s SEND journey. You need to understand your options before you’re in the room.
We’re covering exactly this on Thursday 7th May at 7pm — free, online, open to all parents.
Types of placement. Parental preference rights. What to do if you’re refused.

From our recent Natchathiram CIC workshop.

A lot of Tamil parents don’t struggle because they don’t care.

They struggle because no one has shown them how to speak to the system.

How to explain their child’s needs.
How to ask the right questions.
How to be taken seriously.

That’s where Natchathiram CIC comes in.

You are not alone in this.

If you don’t know what an EHCP is, you’re not alone.

Many parents hear the term but aren’t given a clear explanation of what it actually means or when it’s needed.

An EHCP (Education, Health and Care Plan) is a legal document that sets out a child’s needs and the support required to meet them.

In this workshop, I’ll explain:
• what an EHCP actually is
• when it may be needed
• when SEN Support may be enough
• what the process looks like

Clear information. No pressure.
