The classic dilemma between Equity vs Efficiency…🥸

Photos from LSE SU China Development Society's post 11/02/2022

14th CDF: Economics & Finance Panel

💵 Equity vs. Efficiency: Market Reforms and Capital in the Era of Common Prosperity

▪️ This panel addresses whether the recently renewed policy drive for Common Prosperity, a dated political term in China, implies a return to pursuing equity at the expense of efficiency. In 2021, a "summer blizzard" of regulatory actions targeted various sectors, including fintech, real estate, and private tutoring, driving Common
Prosperity. This panel opens up discussions about the policy intentions behind the clamp-down on these sectors while evaluating reform measures on the rural land market and inclusive finance to reduce income and wealth inequality. This panel seeks to identify financial tools and market-oriented reforms that could resolve distortions in resource allocation and drive capital in the pursuit of Common Prosperity effectively.

▪️Panel Speakers:

Kent Deng(Moderator), Professor in Economic History at LSE

Danny Quah, Dean of the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy, National University of Singapore

Shirley Yu, Senior Practitioner Fellow with the Ash Center of Harvard Kennedy School; Director of LSE China-Africa Initiative

Zhiwu Chen, Director of Asia Global Institute at HKU

Yang Du, Associate at Moller Institute, University of Cambridge

To Meta or not to Meta…🤨

Photos from LSE SU China Development Society's post 10/02/2022

14th CDF: Technology Panel

🛰The Great Reshuffle: Metaverse and the Digital Revolution

▪️ What is the Metaverse's development model? Who will power it? Are we in the Metaverse yet? The Metaverse has emerged as the new arena for brands to compete and experiment on. The foundation of Metaverse is blockchain, a well-adopted but often taken-for-granted concept that has been incorporated in NFT marketplaces and cryptocurrency exchange. The digital revolution has brought forward the question of whether the Metaverse is the next phenomenal high-tech project. This panel will examine the critical infrastructure and regulations of Metaverse following the discussion on its economic and ethical implications.

▪️Panel Speakers:

Jonathan Liebenau,Associate Professor (Reader) in Technology Management at LSE

Jeremy Hall, Professor of Innovation Studies(SPRU), University of Sussex Business School

Yang Du, Associate at Cambridge Moller Institute; Former Head of Asset Management at CITIC Securities

Ehud Shapiro, multi-disciplinary scientist, artist, entrepreneur and Professor of Computer Science and Biology at the Weizmann Institute of Science
