New research has linked a healthy, balanced diet to better brain health and mental wellbeing.
The study analysed 181,990 participants and found that diets rich in vegetables, fruits, cereals, nuts, seeds, pulses, moderate dairy, eggs, and fish improve mental health.
Lead author, Professor Jianfeng Feng, said: “Developing a healthy balanced diet from an early age is crucial for healthy growth. Both families and schools should offer a diverse range of nutritious meals and cultivate an environment that supports their physical and mental health.”

Despite efforts like Jamie Oliver’s campaign for healthier school lunches, many students still face unhealthy meal options due to rising costs and lack of regulation.
There are growing concerns about the impact of school meals on children’s health, with research indicating a large number of UK children consume ultra-processed foods at school, contributing to rising obesity rates and potential long-term health implications.
Campaigners stress the need for nutritious and sustainable school food to support children’s health and academic performance.

New research suggests children are being steered towards unhealthy food choices at school by companies pushing meal deals.
The study which looked at seven UK schools found that school dinners often failed to be filling and the rush to get something quickly meant pupils often chose “grab and go” options such as pizza.
Additionally, there were times when fruit was not visible or easily accessible - with no fruit bought at all by students in three out of seven schools.

A recent survey in Wales has found concerning statistics about the state of school dinners. A mere 19% of the children surveyed claimed they feel full after their school meals, with almost half saying they can’t have more food or a second portion if they ask for it.
On the nutrition front, almost a quarter of children said they can’t always have vegetables if they want them, and 22% said they can’t always have fruit if they want it.
The Children’s Commissioner for Wales urged the government to listen to these concerns and review school dinner guidelines to ensure children get nutritious and filling meals.
