On October 21st, 2023, almost exactly one year ago today, I underwent surgery on my left knee to repair a torn quad—what a journey it's been since then! My recovery is ongoing, but this experience has taught me something important about workplace safety.

"Slips, trips, and falls" often appear in risk assessments, but are sometimes overlooked in terms of impact. I know first-hand, as my injury resulted from what seemed to be a simple slip on a wet floor. That single moment led to a cascade of challenges (excruciating pain first of all) then: turning down work, missing out on family activities, being unable to drive, putting one of my favourite hobbies, karate, on hold, and seeing my fitness decline—all from a seemingly minor incident.

Trying to always look on the positive side, I decided to use this experience to help others and always emphasise to my students who attend my IOSH Managing Safely training course just how crucial it is to properly address these (and other) risks. I hope sharing my story helps others prevent such incidents and avoid the profound impact they can have.

This has truly highlighted the importance of not just including these risks in assessments but fully understanding their potential consequences.

Let’s ensure we give proper attention to the everyday hazards that can disrupt lives in ways we might not expect.

Really honoured to have been asked by my friend and coach Chloe Bruce to help conduct a risk assessment at the newly opened headquarters for Chloe Bruce Academy 🥋 🥋 🥋

Chloe, Helen and I worked together to find hazards and put in place plans to reduce them to As Low As Reasonably Practicable (ALARP). 🦺

So good to see a new business taking the health and safety of its employees, and the people who will visit there, seriously, and not just giving it lip service.

And of course it felt good to be able to use my training to help someone who trains me!!

Yesterday I started day 1 of the IOSH Managing Safely® training course for a client in Trinidad (virtually). It was such an amazing, informative, enjoyable and engaging session!

I had some really participative and clued up students, who enhanced the course ten fold

Looking forward to the next few sessions of this course. 😊

P.S. Note all of my scrunched up post-its in my facilitator notes that I've been using for ages to prompt me in the various sections 😀
