Many of you are coming towards the end of your current course and you will have already learnt many, many signs. 😊

However, there will be times when you and your baby see something and you don’t know the sign for it. πŸ€” That can particularly be the case during the Christmas period as there are so many different things out and about to see! πŸŽ…πŸ»πŸŽ„

Whilst our online sign dictionary is brilliant to look signs up there are of course things not in it and, more importantly, you don’t want to miss the moment to talk about what you see with your little one. So our golden rule is always be inventive and make up a sign. 😁

As long as you then consistently use that sign when talking about that thing with your baby it really doesn’t matter if no one else understands it. Remember baby signing is all about YOU and YOUR baby communicating πŸ₯°

This is a wonderful new and needed initiative for new mums πŸ’•

Hello and welcome to the Mother and Baby Circle!

The Circle is for all new mums and their babies to come and openly talk about their feelings of experience of motherhood and matrescence.

The Circle involves creating a safe, empathetic and non-judgemental environment, where active listening is encouraged, comfortable silences are embraced and emotions free to flow.
Mothers can talk about and share anything they want; this is a safe space to let it out, laugh, cry, empathise and feel supported.
What is shared in the circle, stays in the circle.

Helen and Mel facilitate the sharing circle. We are mothers and perinatal professionals who run the Tower Hamlets Family meet-up. Mel (Wrap a Hug Sling Library East London) is a babywearing consultant and new parent support professional. Helen (BirthWright) is an emotional health coach, placenta remedy specialist, hypnobirthing teacher and doula. We are also both breastfeeding peer supporter and have a wealth of knowledge and experience in all things parenting and motherhood.
We hold the circle at the Canvas, 27 Old Ford Road E2 9PJ in Bethnal Green 1.30pm to 2.30pm on the dates advertised in the event.

Herbal tea and biscuits/cakes will be available for a little boost, please bring a re-usable cup with lid.

There is space for buggies but try to come with baby in a sling if possible as space is limited. We have mats, blankets and bolsters to make you and baby comfy.

To attend, please book a free ticket via the EventBrite link (link in comments/FB events). Please get in touch ASAP if you can't attend so we can offer your ticket to another mama. If you want to attend and the event is sold out, please get in touch so I can add you to the waiting list, pop me a DM!
Love, Mel and Helen β™₯️

As specialists in baby signing, we try to keep baby’s hands (mostly) free so they are not distracted by a toy and can truly pay attention, then learn and imitate and eventually sign with us. Small class sizes ensure that I can acknowledge and connect with every child as an individual and they are not lost in a sea of faces. We want your baby to know they are important, that their actions are exciting to us and that their interaction with the room, adults and other babies is amazing!

Your course is supported with nationally recognised, innovative and unique online resources including weekly streamed classes, supporting videos, a signing dictionary, games and music, all included in your course. We want to empower your confidence and enjoyment of signing with your baby.

This week we are having fun with the Where? sign!

This week in Toddler classes, our theme has been Colours! πŸ”΄πŸŸ£πŸ”΅πŸŸ’πŸŸ‘πŸŸ

So keep it simple and take just 1 colour a day and point out all the things that are one colour- start with red (do them in the order of the song so you know where you are) ❀️.

Start your day by saying… Today, shall we find all the *red* things?

πŸ’‹πŸ’„πŸ§‘πŸΌβ€πŸ¦°πŸ’ƒπŸƒβ€β™‚οΈπŸ§ΆπŸ‘ πŸ§£β›‘οΈπŸŽ’πŸ™πŸ“πŸŒΉπŸŒΊπŸŽπŸ“πŸ’πŸ…πŸŒΆοΈπŸ₯«πŸΏπŸ«πŸ₯€πŸ“πŸπŸš£β€β™€οΈπŸ₯πŸŽΈπŸš’πŸš˜πŸšπŸš’β›±οΈβ›ΊοΈβ˜ŽοΈβ°πŸ§°πŸ§²πŸŽˆπŸŽπŸ“•πŸ“Œβœ‚οΈπŸ–οΈβ›”οΈβ™₯οΈπŸ‡¨πŸ‡¦πŸ‡¨πŸ‡

Of course you always do the sign when you say the word… stroke your index finger across your bottom lip… RED πŸ”΄

Tomorrow look for all the *Yellow* things! 🟑

πŸ₯° 'Eye Contact' is one of our weekly themes in our 'Babes' course (for 0-5 mths), and with good reason. Making eye contact with your baby whilst talking or singing is known to be really important for their development. Scientists from Cambridge University have shown in a study that when a parent and baby make eye contact, whilst the adult was singing to the baby, their brainwaves actually synchronised with each other. This synchronisation signals their availability and intention to communicate and this is likely to improve the baby's chance of learning. 🧠 The scientists also noted that when the adult made direct eye contact with the baby, the baby made more noises or 'vocalisations' indicating their desire to communicate. πŸ—£ 😍

Do you have Netflix?

If you do, this documentary called Babies is fascinating! It’s 6 shows and I’ve watched 2 so far. Did you know we are born with an ability to notice the tiniest details in faces? Tiny babies can tell monkey faces apart! Adults find this extremely difficult to do. We lose this ability as we see the faces of our caregivers more and more and hone in on them more. Losing the extra skills of telling similar faces apart.

Many of you will be in your first week of term, where in Babes classes we look at Eye Contact as the theme. Babies are programmed to seek out faces, right from birth and hold eye contact. Taking in the tiniest details of their loved ones' faces, building strong bonds and using this as their first forms of communication with their care givers.

The Babies series uses experts who have carried out lots of research to discover how babies learn about the world in their first year. It explores how they use their senses to make discoveries. It’s well worth a watch.

Our Story

Developed with the help of Speech and Language professionals and recommended by experts, Sing and Sign is Britain’s longest running and best loved baby signing programme. I run classes in Hackney & Tower Hamlets but as you can see we are an army of over 110 franchisees.

I started my Sing and Sign journey when my baby was already 13 months old and we went straight into Stage 2. He was signing in no time and we both loved it so much I became a teacher in 2011 and in less than a year I got my own franchise.

I truly believe that teaching your baby some simple signs when they are very young and cannot communicate with speech is just about the best thing you can do for your baby (that and swimming... and loving them of course). So it is my mission to encourage and inspire any parents who comes along to my classes so they can enjoy a rich deep bond and relationship with their baby through early communication and therefore a greater understanding.

What is baby signing? Babies use all kinds of signs and gestures as a natural part of learning to talk. Encouraging your baby with extra signs like milk, more, change nappy or tired will help your baby communicate!

Baby signing with Sing and Sign is easy because we make it fun to learn! Your baby will recognise important words sooner and can use the signs to β€œtalk” to you before speech.
