Learning doesn’t always happen in a classroom.
For the sixth year, Bloomsbury Institute London is proud to partner with the Bloomsbury Festival, with Bloomsbury Radio once again serving as the Festival’s official broadcaster.
The partnership offers a great example of how practical experiences can complement academic learning and help develop the skills employers value.
Through Bloomsbury Radio, lead by our Learning Development and Community Engagement Manager, Barra Fitzgibbon, volunteers are trained in live radio broadcast production. Everything is live. When you open the mic, you’re live.
That environment creates a unique learning experience. It develops technical broadcasting skills, but also transferable skills that are valuable across almost every career: communication, confidence, critical thinking, adaptability and the ability to listen.
And listening is particularly important.
The best presenters and interviewers aren’t simply the people who know what to say. They’re the people who know how to listen, respond and create meaningful conversations.
Experiences like this also provide opportunities to build professional networks, work alongside others and gain practical experience that can strengthen a CV and showreel.
For those interested in journalism and the creative industries, these opportunities can be particularly valuable. A number of people trained through Bloomsbury Radio have gone on to careers in journalism, across both radio and the press.
Employability is about more than a qualification. It’s about developing the skills, experience and confidence to apply what you’ve learned in the real world.
That’s why opportunities like this are such an important part of the Bloomsbury Institute London experience. Our approach to education is about more than what happens in lectures and seminars. We want our students to develop the practical, transferable skills that add value to their degree and help prepare them for life beyond it.
