Around 800 million people worldwide need reading glasses but do not have them. Presbyopia affects around 1.8 billion people globally, yet access to simple near-vision correction remains limited in many settings.
To mark our upcoming issue on presbyopia, we are hosting a webinar exploring practical strategies to expand access to near-vision care.
This discussion will bring together experts from global health organisations, academia and eye care programmes to examine topics including:
• community-based delivery models
• innovative distribution approaches
• over-the-counter provision of reading glasses
• raising awareness and generating demand
• policy, regulation and WHO tools for action

Poor refractive outcomes is one of the main reasons for cataract surgery failing to provide patients with the vision they need.
In this issue, we will explore how refractive outcomes can be monitored and improved through good biometry, intraocular lens (IOL) selection, and auditing to improve biometry – all of which helps to minimise the number of people who remain limited in their visual function after undergoing cataract surgery.
