Mark Grenside (SH 70-74) enjoyed a successful international career in film and television before becoming a published author.

Drawing on experiences gained across more than 120 countries, he now writes historical thrillers from his home in Malta. Here, he reflects on an unconventional career that took him from Kidnap and Ransom insurance to The Muppets, and ultimately to the world of publishing.

Rugbeian (SH 06-11) is a bespoke furniture maker based near Rugby.

His work explores organic forms and the interplay of light, texture and tactility. His work is experimental in both form and material, but rooted in traditional craftsmanship to create pieces that will endure. 

Recent commissions include unique home-office desks and bespoke HiFi cabinets, alongside statement pieces that blur the line between sculpture and furniture. With a strong preference for solid wood, Theo creates designs intended to age gracefully and be handed down through generations to come.

We recently caught up with Theo to learn about his journey to becoming a furniture designer, time at Rugby School and advice to Rugbeians.

Congratulations to Rugbeian Dr Emeka Ilione (C 18-20) , professional rugby football player for Leicester Tigers, who has officially graduated from the University of Nottingham Medical School after six years of study.

Balancing the demands of a medical degree alongside an elite sporting career is a remarkable achievement and a reflection of dedication and determination.

Are you running the 2027 TCS London Marathon ?

Did you know that the first London Marathon was organised by Rugbeian Christopher Brasher (SH 42-46) in 1981? He grew up taking part in the Crick Run, the School’s annual cross-country race, first introduced in 1838 and still recognised as the oldest organised school run in the world.

If so, we’d love to hear from you. We’ll be sharing the stories of our Rugbeian runners and the charities they are supporting, and we’d like to include you.

Rugbeian Charles Swinfen (T 2019–24) is preparing to undertake an extraordinary challenge to raise funds for by punting from Oxford to Cambridge.

Charles, the current President of the St John’s College, Cambridge, Punting Society, will be joined by three fellow members of the Society as they embark on the 204-mile journey in late September.

The 204-mile challenge is expected to take 11 days to complete, with the team aiming to raise £5,000 for the charity.

Throughout the journey, the team will be supported by friends and family.

Rugbeian Harriet Warner (Tu 01-06) shares news that the annual recruitment window for the First Aid Nursing Yeomanry (FANY, also known as the Princess Royal’s Volunteer Corps) is currently open until Tuesday 14 July.
 
Pictured above in heritage uniform at the Lord Mayor’s Show, Harriet has been a member of the FANY since 2024. The Corps was founded in 1907 and is an all-female voluntary organisation that trains weekly and deploys multi-faceted rapid response teams to support civil and military authorities in times of crisis. They also deploy in non-emergency operations and routinely assist organisations with their training.

On 17 June, England took on Croatia in their opening group-stage match, with four Rugbeians in attendance to cheer on the Three Lions.
