An except from Jally playing 'Sankananki Keh Ko Leng' (Sankananki the brave man) as part of the Griot Culture & Music course materials.
Here you see him playing the traditional kora - his favourite instrument and the one that he, and the generations before him grew up playing with. Tuning this instrument by ear is in itself an incredible skill, mastering it... well let's just say he had the advantage of 73 generations of kora players who passed on their knowledge to him.
Over the past weeks, he's been going into London schools to teach pupils all about the Sene-Gambian griot traditions, and the fascinating role they still play, both here in the UK and back home.
Global Music Academy
The Global Music Academy exists to promote diverse music education. We're a team of musicians from around the globe ready to inspire through music.
We've been hard at work with the brilliant griot and kora master developing his brand new course on traditional Sene-gambian music and storytelling culture for UK schools.
'Griot Music and Culture', has been piloting in schools across Croydon, Lambeth and Tower Hamlets and the results have been incredible.
With an emphasis on aural learning (done via listening instead of writing), the course covers the foundation and legacy of griot culture, and how to sing and perform in styles rooted in hundreds of years of history. Bonus points for the Mandinka earworm!

Stay tuned for the results!
It's why we love what we do!
Working with has been nothing but a delight. Getting to witness the outpour of audience support during their 10-year anniversary tour, and the classrooms of inspired children we visited along the way, only goes to show why their success is where it is.
We wish them all the best for the journey ahead, and can't wait to keep working together.
If you haven't heard their music yet, we recommend one of our personal favourites 'The Scottish Egyptian' from their Arabesque album.
For Saied it was just a warmup, to us it felt like a serenade. There's magic (and many years of practice) in those fingers.
What a pleasure it was to bring our artists to Blackpool for 'Culturefest', a collaboration with that saw us working with 17 schools and over 3000 pupils! We finished the week with a concert at one of the UK's must stunning venues .

What a week it's been 🪘🕺🎶🚸🌊🔊🎤
After months of fruitful planning, we've delivered one of our most extensive projects to date. Together with we put on 'Culturefest' - a global music showcase across schools in Blackpool, Fylde and Wyre.
The exciting initiative introduced pupils to global cultures through music, offering a mix of school assemblies, interactive workshops and a celebratory concert for pupils and their families.
With thousands of pupils reached, we couldn't be happier with the outcome and will be sharing more of the magic (and our stellar facilitators) in the days to come.
As always, it's such delight to work with !
We teamed up again this year to do a number of days across schools in Tower Hamlets, thanks to our new collaboration with Tower Hamlets Arts & Music Education Services.
Over 4 days we worked with over 1400+ pupils in assemblies and classrooms, as Sohini gave them a beginners course in Bengali songs, singers, scales and theory.
And we're just getting started! Well be back this autumn with a full Arabic music takeover with some of Syria's finest.
