The Boatyard Guitar Workshop

At the Boatyard Guitar Workshop you can learn the skills to design and build your own guitar from sc

Operating as usual

Ian carefully fits some freshly cut block inlays into his fingerboard. They are made from the same piece of wood used for the cap on his guitar and are going to look amazing 😍

Charlie with his recently completed build. There were definitely some unusual challenges to this project but was lots of fun to do and turned out great…

If you’re planning on fitting bright red EMG pickups into your guitar build you obviously need bright red block inlays to match…

My New Year’s resolution to post more pictures to Instagram was a complete failure. So I’m going to try much harder now and there’s no better way to start than with this picture of Jason and his recently finished London Plane/Spruce OM style acoustic. Sounds as good as it looks…

Happy Holidays everyone. Especially to those who supported our humble workshop throughout the year, from liking our posts or attending a taster day through to building their own project(s), thank you from the bottom of our hearts... take care and stay safe... see you in 2024…

Another finished guitar leaves the workshop. Anthony with his beautiful koa topped S style guitar. Loaded with and a locking trem this sounds and plays amazing… Anthony has built a few guitars and they get nicer and nicer. The only disappointing thing is that he took it home!!

Finished guitar day. Another first time build leaves the workshop. This time it’s Ian with a rather fetching set neck loaded with Seymour Duncans, a Vega Trem and capped with a gorgeous maple top…

Take the neck and trem of a Stratocaster, add to the body of a Telecaster, sprinkle in some Gibson inspired P90’s and wrap it all up with a walnut cap and boom you have David’s first build. Sounds as good as it looks….

Budd puts his newly finished Jazzmaster through its paces in the workshop. This was lots of fun to do, plays great and sounds amazing (THAT neck pickup 😍)… and a terrific achievement for his first build. Great stuff…

Have the trick or treaters outdone themselves this year? I hope so but just to be on the safe side I might stay in the workshop tonight… 😬

Mark came into the workshop with an idea to make a double neck and starting with just a rough pencil sketch he’s finally arrived at the end of his build journey. Too many features to list but powered by the amazing pickups from Stuart at it is an incredible instrument. And an unbelievable achievement for Mark’s first build…

Latest in the finished guitars is Luc putting his black ash telecaster through its paces. Looks and plays great and with a split humbucker in the bridge and a P90 in the neck it sounds amazing…

Finished guitar day 🥳 Tony and his rather fetching double bound Esquire style guitar… sounds just as good as it looks…

Wow what a busy week but it all seems worth it when you have a trio of tasty teles on the wall…

Routing end grafts… getting them in nice and crisp is always a tricky little job but we were hugely helped out by the loan of a jig from the wonderful Simon at (cheers mate!)…

Occasionally someone comes to the workshop with an idea that challenges us as much as them… this has been huge amounts of fun and is getting close to completion but I couldn’t resist posting a little preview pic…

I rarely post pictures of builds prior to them being finished but this koa capped S-style guitar of Anthony’s is coming along so nicely it just had to be shared!…

Pete’s bass is entering a critical phase of the build as he thoroughly checks it for maximum ‘rockitude’… it passed of course!

Charlie gets first try of our new rolling pin sander from the lovely chaps at

George with his completed neck thru guitar… a shred machine from start to finish. From his initial design and pencil sketches to the final build this was an awful lot of fun 🤘🤘

First session and Otis gets on making a template for his custom bass… this is gonna be special!!

Using our new spray cabinet and HVLP gun to finish this custom design in an old school TV yellow (ish)… Thanks to

Lots of measurements, a little dash of maths and some careful routing. Luc concentrates on getting his neck pocket just right…

Who doesn’t love an 11th, 12th AND 13th fret inlay… either that or the workshop needs a good dusting… 😬

Sometimes a little helping hand is all that is required…

Rosette in, purfling in now it’s just a case of Charlie flushing everything down smooth…

Budd making great progress with his Jazzmaster build… time for some neck carving with the trusty spokeshave…

Luthiery Friday!!… a busy end to a busy week…

Time to mark out some fret positions… takes steady hand, one false move and it’s note H!!…

Concentrating on getting your fret dots in just right…
