er the first Bishop of London, whose territory covered London and Essex, the College was founded in 2007 by the Bishops of London and Chelmsford. It emerged as the coming together of two institutions – North Thames Ministerial Training Course (NTMTC), based in the dioceses of London and Chelmsford, and St Paul’s Theological Centre (SPTC) which grew out of Holy Trinity Brompton. Today, we offer training opportunities in different parts of the country – London, Chelmsford, the North West and the South West. Will you join us in prayer? 🙏

We are so excited to welcome our new and returning students to St Mellitus College in London, the East Midlands and the South West. Next week, our new students will begin their induction, and the following week marks the start of the autumn term.

Please join us as we pray for our students as they step into new opportunities, routines and roles, faithfully pursuing God’s call to theological study and applying their learning in their workplaces, churches and communities.

We also want to lift up our staff across our centres, especially those beginning new roles. We pray that they will quickly feel at home, supported and confident in all that God has equipped them to do.

And we pray for all those studying theology across the UK: may the Lord give them grace for all the term holds, curiosity and joy in their learning, and a worshipful, prayerful and supportive community in which to grow.

After attending the Alpha course, Alison, a former Law graduate and charity worker, reconnected with her faith and recentred herself on God, ‘I got stuck into church life, serving on pretty much every team going, moving into a flat share with others from my church and rediscovering the beauty of a local community serving God.’

Following a stint as Church Warden, alongside encouragement from people at church, she felt a nudge from God to explore ordination. She attended an Open Day at St Mellitus College to experience student life firsthand.

‘I was particularly struck by the student-led evening prayer and how worship is woven into the fabric of the college. The students I spoke to were committed to following God’s calling — willing to be prepared for their future ministry. I left the open evening wanting to join them.’

Alison continues to work at Age UK alongside her role at her placement church and studying at St Mellitus College on Tuesday evenings. ‘Students are called to different ministries in different places and communities, but we can be confident that the college as a whole will do everything possible to equip us for our future serving Jesus, whatever and wherever that might be.’

This is a part-time role that sits within a growing partnership between St Mellitus College and Pentecostal denominations and will contribute to the development of a distinct Pentecostal pathway within the life of the College.

The postholder will support students academically, pastorally and formationally, with particular responsibility for enabling theological reflection rooted in Pentecostal spirituality and practice.

‘Being a student isn’t complicated, but having to hold and juggle different elements of life alongside being stretched, shaped and formed in the image of Christ has been a humbling and rewarding experience.’

As a 35-year-old South Asian single mum, Sadiya was hesitant to start training for ordained ministry because she didn’t feel that she fit the bill.

‘I was a caterer for many years and worked with clients ranging from food banks to film crews, but I felt something was missing, even though I was living my passion. Over time, I realised God was deepening my trust in Him, and through obedience, I pursued the call. Our gifts and our purpose are not usually the same; however, God uses it all for His calling in our lives.’

Sadiya joined St Mellitus College to train for ordination. As she already had a BA in Theology, she opted to study for her MA in Theology, Ministry and Mission.

As well as being stretched academically, she also had to navigate the practical realities of training: ‘Being a single parent, I have some barriers, such as school drop-off and attending residentials. However, the college has been understanding and has helped to accommodate and adjust to my needs.’

‘It has been a really interesting journey throughout my theological learning, considering how theology applies in a context where Jesus is not necessarily the focus of the space. There will be people there who do follow Jesus, but that is not the main focus for the majority of those I work with. So, how do you navigate that? It has been a real blessing to be in this space and to be open about that with people.’

In our latest Alumni Story, Paul shares his personal journey through St Mellitus College, into full-time community leadership, and now into digital youth work. At St Mellitus College, our students combine rich theological training with on-the-ground experience. While studying for his MA in Theology, Ministry and Mission, Paul could immediately put what he learned into practice to serve his community’s needs.

‘I think one of the beautiful things about being at St Mellitus was that there was such a clear understanding that theology is not separate from our everyday lives. Our understanding of God is embedded in everything we do, in the very fabric of all that we see and experience.’
