There’s a big difference between learning how something works and actually getting your hands on it.

At North London Garages GTA, practical experience is at the heart of what we do.

Our learners spend time in the workshop developing real automotive skills, getting familiar with the tools, techniques and working environment they’ll encounter as they progress towards apprenticeships and careers within the motor industry.

It means learning how to approach a job properly, understanding the importance of safety and good working practices, solving problems when things don’t go to plan and, most importantly, building confidence through experience.

For many young people, traditional classroom learning isn’t necessarily where they perform at their best. Give them the opportunity to learn practically, develop a skill and see the progress they’re making, and it can be a completely different story.

That’s why vocational training matters.

We want to give young people from all backgrounds the opportunity to discover what they’re capable of and understand the different routes available to them within the automotive industry.

The new academic year is well underway at North London Garages GTA, and the workshops are already busy.

For our learners, automotive training is about much more than sitting in a classroom. It’s about getting hands-on, working with real vehicles, learning from experienced people in the industry and developing the practical skills and confidence needed to take those first steps into the motor trade.

And those opportunities are for everyone.

We’re proud to see young men and women learning side by side in our workshops, challenging old stereotypes and building the skills needed for careers as mechanics, vehicle technicians and automotive apprentices.

The industry itself is changing too. Alongside the fundamentals of vehicle servicing and repair, today’s technicians are working with increasingly advanced diagnostics, electronics, electric and hybrid vehicles and constantly evolving automotive technology.

You don’t need to arrive knowing how to fix a car. That’s what training is for.

🚗 Looking for a way into the automotive industry? This could be your starting point.

At North London Garages GTA, we’ve been helping people develop the skills needed for careers in the motor industry for more than 55 years, with over 3,000 apprentices and technicians completing one or more of our programmes along the way.

And we’re still looking for the next generation.

Our automotive apprenticeships combine real employment with structured training, giving you the opportunity to earn while you learn and develop practical skills both in the workplace and through training at our Enfield centre.

From servicing and maintenance to fault diagnosis, mechanical systems and the technology found in modern vehicles, this is about developing skills that can take you into a genuine career.

You’ll learn on the job, gain hands-on experience and work towards recognised automotive qualifications. NLG currently offers pathways including Level 2 Autocare Technician and Level 3 Motor Vehicle Service and Maintenance Technician apprenticeships.

And automotive is for everyone.

We want to see more young people discovering what the industry can offer, including more women considering careers as mechanics, vehicle technicians and automotive apprentices.

You don’t need to walk through the door already knowing how to diagnose a fault or repair a vehicle.

You need the willingness to learn.

There are opportunities to progress too. Depending on your pathway and experience, that journey can lead towards becoming a qualified Light Vehicle Technician and potentially onwards into areas such as MOT testing, EV and hybrid work, senior technician roles and workshop management.

GCSE results are in, and many young people will now be asking an important question: what happens next?

The answer will be different for everyone.

Sixth form can provide a route into further academic study and A-Levels. College can offer the opportunity to specialise in a particular subject or vocational area. An apprenticeship can combine genuine employment with structured training, recognised qualifications and practical industry experience.

None of these routes should be treated as the automatic or “correct” choice. The right next step depends on the individual, their interests, how they prefer to learn and where they might want to go in the future.

It is also important to remember that an apprenticeship is not a backup plan. It is a credible career route that gives someone the opportunity to develop workplace skills, gain meaningful experience and earn while they learn.

For young people considering the motor industry, modern automotive careers extend far beyond a traditional understanding of vehicle mechanics. The sector includes diagnostics, electronics, mechanical systems, servicing and repair, electric and hybrid vehicles, and increasingly advanced vehicle technology.

You do not need to know everything about cars before beginning your training. That is exactly what training is for. Curiosity, reliability and a genuine willingness to learn can provide an excellent foundation.
