The future of education in Iraq deserves more international attention.
When people speak about Iraq, the international conversation does not always reflect the Iraq that many of us working in education know.
Iraq is a great nation with a deep respect for knowledge, learning and academic achievement. Historically, it has had a long tradition of sending students overseas for advanced education and training, building academic links around the world.
Through the Higher Committee for Education Development in Iraq, a national initiative was launched to provide 5,000 overseas scholarships for Iraqi students to study at recognised international institutions. For 2026, a further 1,000 scholarships were announced for master’s degrees, PhDs and advanced medical training.
But international education is increasingly moving in both directions.
This is especially important for students from the Middle East and Africa, where access to affordable international higher education and scholarship opportunities can make a real difference.
Iraq’s education story is therefore becoming much broader than simply sending students overseas. It is increasingly about two-way academic mobility, scholarships, research, knowledge exchange and international partnerships.
And Iraq has already shown the world what its people can achieve. Iraqi scholars, researchers, professionals and leaders have made important contributions internationally across science, medicine, engineering, architecture, public service, business and the arts.
That makes the next chapter particularly exciting.
On 29–30 October, the Iraq Student Exhibition in Baghdad will be co-organised with the Iraqi Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research and hosted at the University of Baghdad.
There could hardly be a more meaningful setting.
The University of Baghdad is one of Iraq’s most important academic institutions, and its Al-Jadriya campus represents decades of Iraqi intellectual, academic and research life.
For us, hosting this gathering there is not simply about the venue.
It is about bringing educators from Iraq and around the world together in a place that represents Iraq’s academic history, resilience and ambition for the future.
Our hope is that the event becomes much more than a student exhibition a meeting point where educators, students, researchers, scholarship stakeholders and international partners can explore student mobility, scholarships, research collaboration and long-term educational partnerships.
Having worked with Iraqi colleagues and education stakeholders over the years, I continue to be impressed by their hospitality, respect for education and determination to create opportunities for the next generation.
