Sixth Form students volunteer in Malawi

Sixth Form students from Trinity School travelled to Malawi this summer to volunteer with local communities and see first-hand the impact of our longstanding partnership with Hope4Malawi and Chipwepwete Primary School.

Since 2015, the Trinity community has supported projects designed to improve access to education in rural Malawi. At the heart of the partnership is a feeding programme providing children at Chipwepwete with a free school lunch, helping to encourage school attendance and support learning. Over the years, fundraising has also helped provide new classrooms, a library, toilets, teacher accommodation, educational resources and wider infrastructure.

Alumni Speaker Challenges ThinkSoc with Provocative Ethics Debate

This week’s ThinkSoc welcomed Rahul Mehan (Class of 2025), now a second-year Philosophy, Politics and Economics (PPE) student at the University of Oxford, who returned to Trinity to deliver a thought-provoking talk entitled “Why Teaching Ethics is the Most Immoral Profession.”

Drawing on the principles of utilitarianism and the origins of ethical thought, Rahul explored how ethical frameworks are developed and questioned whether they can provide practical guidance in the complexities of everyday life. His engaging presentation challenged students to think critically about the foundations of morality and offered alternative perspectives to those currently being explored within the A Level curriculum.

The interactive nature of the session encouraged lively discussion and debate, with students considering a range of philosophical viewpoints and testing their own assumptions about ethics and moral decision-making.

In addition to sharing his academic interests, Rahul also spoke about his experience of applying to Oxford, offering valuable advice and insights into the admissions process for students considering making similar applications.

Upper Sixth student Tomi said:
“I really enjoyed the interactive nature of the talk and Rahul’s tackling of a controversial topic.”

Fellow Upper Sixth student Tom added:
“I really enjoyed the talk by Rahul and it was a refreshing change in perspective on ethics. I was particularly interested by his ideas that ethical frameworks and concepts can be impractical and often fail in everyday life, especially when considering theories formulated hundreds of years ago.”

We are grateful to Rahul for returning to Trinity to share his knowledge and experiences, and for inspiring students to engage with philosophical ideas beyond the classroom.

PHYSICS SOCIETY WELCOMES IMPERIAL COLLEGE MECHANICAL ENGINEERING STUDENT KRISTIAN SARAI

Physics Society was delighted to welcome former student Kristian (Class of 2025) for a fascinating talk exploring the physics and engineering behind something many of us use every day but rarely stop to think about: the humble bus.

Drawing on his passion for both buses and physics, Kristian demonstrated how engineering principles are embedded throughout modern vehicle design. From seat fittings and body panels to the complex systems hidden beneath the floor, he explained that virtually everything we see, and don't see, on a bus is the result of careful engineering.

Students learned about the different energy transfers taking place in the equipment powering electric buses, differentiating between hydrogen fuel cell and lithium-ion battery technology. Kristian also discussed features such as low-floor bus design, suspension systems and engine bay layouts, highlighting the practical challenges engineers must overcome to create vehicles that are safe, efficient and accessible.

Using the whiteboard and enlisting the help of several student volunteers, Kristian also introduced the concepts of centre of gravity and pulse width modulation and demonstrated how these concepts influence vehicle performance and design. These concepts gave students an insight into how the theory that they learn in the classroom is applied in the real world.

Looking to the future, Kristian encouraged students to consider whether battery-powered trains could transform rail travel in the UK, sparking discussion about the role engineers will play in developing sustainable transport solutions.

Kristian is currently in his second year studying Mechanical Engineering at Imperial College London, shared a glimpse of university life, including his timetable, laboratory work and collaborative project teams. He concluded with some valuable advice for aspiring engineers: work hard, think ahead when choosing subjects, consider undertaking an EPQ, seek relevant work experience, and look for opportunities to pursue independent projects that showcase both initiative and enthusiasm for engineering.

Thank you, Kristian, for an engaging and inspiring talk that demonstrated how physics and engineering combine to shape the world around us.

A fantastic achievement and thoroughly deserved recognition. Congratulations to everyone involved, particularly our students, whose creativity, enthusiasm and commitment throughout the campaign have been truly inspiring.

Thank you to our alumni community for championing the campaign through your encouragement, fundraising efforts and generous donations. A special shout-out to the teachers and departments who have taken on the challenge with such energy and ingenuity, devising ever more adventurous ways to raise funds and awareness for the Trinity Bursary Fund.

Together, you are helping to make a Trinity education accessible to talented young people from all backgrounds.

We’re delighted to share that Trinity’s T60 bursary fundraising campaign has been named one of just six national finalists for the Independent School of the Year 2026 Outstanding Fundraising Achievement award.

Launched to mark 60 years of Trinity at Shirley Park, T60 has brought our whole community together to raise awareness and support for the Trinity Bursary Fund. From student-led challenges and the T60 Makers’ Market to the Music Department’s 600-mile challenge, our community has shown incredible creativity, generosity and commitment. 💙

Most importantly, T60 has sparked a wider conversation about how bursaries help build the diverse community that makes Trinity such a special place.

And the T60 Challenge continues! New students joining Trinity this year are invited to find their own creative way to raise £60 before Christmas. 🎶🎨🏃‍♀️
