We are thrilled to invite you to our annual musical season at the Bridewell Theatre. This year promises something truly exceptional, unique, and rarely seen.
Lady in the Dark is a groundbreaking Broadway musical that premiered in 1941.
Written by Moss Hart it has a delicious score by Kurt Weill, alongside the most poignant of lyrics by Ira Gershwin.
It centres on Liza Elliott, a successful but emotionally troubled fashion magazine editor, who suffers from recurring dreams and depression. Through psychoanalysis, Liza explores her fear of commitment, her insecurities about femininity, and childhood trauma.
Featuring famous songs ‘My Ship’, ‘The Saga of Jenny’, and ‘Tchaikovsky’, Stephen Sondheim famously said ‘there wouldn’t be Company or Follies if there hadn’t been Lady in the Dark.’ Recognised as the first concept musical, Lady in the Dark breaks musical theatre norms, fusing Broadway glitz and melody with dark and poignant text in a way that blurs the boundaries of musical theatre and straight play.
The students have embraced the challenge of bringing this seminal, avant-garde musical to life.
Under the visionary direction of award-winning Matt Ryan, audiences can expect a heartfelt, thought-provoking, and ambitious production. Why have one Liza when you can have 7?! Gloriously staged dreams will bring technicoloured sequences of dance and song alive as Liza bravely dives into her subconscious.
The rest of our distinguished creative team includes Archie McMorran as Musical Director, Steven Harris as Choreographer, and Tallulah Caskey as Designer, with Lighting and Sound design expertly executed by Charlie Morgan Jones and David Beckham.
Our company of 38, plus live band, is befitting of this epic show, and offers a rare chance to see a largely forgotten musical. It promises a trip to the theatre unlike anything you have witnessed before. Don’t miss this one!
