Starting Secondary School and preparing for GCSEs are very different stages, but strong foundations and confidence matter in both.

For our Year 7 pupils, lessons give them somewhere to ask questions, go back over learning and build confidence while they adjust to a much bigger school.

For Years 10 and 11, we increasingly focus on GCSE skills, filling learning gaps, understanding exam questions and helping children see how to develop their answers and gain marks.

Our Secondary English and Maths lessons run in Tooting and Earlsfield, including new Year 10 groups this September.

In 2016, Growing Young Minds was just me and a couple of children learning in Tooting.

Ten years later we have a team of teachers and children learning across Tooting, Earlsfield and Colliers Wood.

The classrooms have changed and the team has grown, but the things I wanted Growing Young Minds to stand for are still what we work towards today.

Children knowing their teacher, having time to ask questions, building strong foundations, growing in confidence and enjoying learning along the way.

How are we already a month into the school year?

September has disappeared.

We have welcomed children back, started new groups, celebrated our 10th birthday and seen lots of learning happening across all three locations.

A month in is also a good point to think about how the year has started for your child.

For Year 7s, are they beginning to feel at home in Secondary School?
For Years 10 and 11, are they feeling confident about the GCSE work ahead?
And for our younger children, are those foundations secure as the learning starts to move forward?

We are looking forward to seeing what the rest of this school year brings.

Over the summer I reached out to families and pupils who have been part of Growing Young Minds over the last ten years.

Some are now finishing A-Levels or heading to university. Some still have younger siblings learning with us.

Reading what they remembered was probably one of my favourite parts of our 10-year celebrations.

Not because of the grades or exams, although there have been plenty to celebrate, but because they remembered how they felt.

This September we have been asking our current children to share their own thoughts too.

Ten years apart, and it has been lovely to see how many of the same things still matter.

Thinking Thursday has reached GCSE level this week.
Can you solve it?

Have a go before checking the answer and, more importantly, can you explain how you got there?

Answer:
First find the number of unused pots:
2/5 of 400 = 160
The ratios are:
Small : Medium = 1 : 3
Medium : Large = 1 : 4
To combine them, make the number of medium pots the same:
Small : Medium : Large = 1 : 3 : 12
There are 16 parts altogether.
160 ÷ 16 = 10
So there are 10 unused small pots.
10 out of 400 pots are unused small pots:
10 ÷ 400 × 100 = 2.5%
Answer: 2.5%

I have been a teacher for much longer than Growing Young Minds has existed, but this September marks 10 years since I left the classroom to start it.

I started Growing Young Minds because I wanted more time with children. Time to explain something differently, find out why they were stuck, ask questions and build relationships that lasted longer than one school year.

Ten years later, I still teach.

I still love being in the classroom, hearing children's ideas, finding different ways to explain something and watching their confidence grow.

Growing Young Minds is much bigger than me now, but being a teacher is still at the heart of why I do it.

We are now a few weeks into the new school year. How has your child settled?

By now you are probably starting to get a feel for how things are going. Are they enjoying their new class? Are they confident with the learning? Are there areas they are finding harder?

For every child it is different, but as parents we often have a good instinct when something needs a little more support.

If you are starting to think some additional help with English or Maths would be useful, you can come and try our lessons for two weeks and see whether the group is right for your child.

Over the last few months I have been asking former pupils what they remember about Growing Young Minds.

Charlotte attended while preparing for Secondary School and, years later, what stayed with her wasn't a particular worksheet or test. It was the friends she made and enjoying learning.

When I started Growing Young Minds ten years ago, that was exactly what I wanted to create. Somewhere children could learn, build confidence, make friends and enjoy being there.

It is lovely to know that those are the things children still remember years later.
