📰 Institute Update!
This year's Annual General Meeting (AGM) was held this week (25th October) in London where yet another year of outstanding performance and financial growth was revealed ✅

During the AGM, President Kevin Shakesheff (FICS) unveiled the Institute's Annual Report for the fiscal year 2022/2023. The report highlights an impressive financial performance, showcasing our continued commitment to excellence and innovation in the maritime and shipping sector.
In a significant development, we reported a substantial increase in total income of 12.5% rise from the previous year. This financial achievement reflects the Institute's resolute focus on advancing our core educational programmes, including the Institute Online Academy.

Chairman Glenn Murphy (FICS) remarked "I will complete my term as Chairman with the Institute today and as I pass the baton to my successor, I am filled with a profound sense of optimism and excitement about the Institute's future. Our financial capabilities, which have been significantly bolstered over the past few years, provide a solid foundation for the exciting journey ahead."

Director Robert Hill (FICS) emphasised, "The Institute, with its 112-year tradition of serving the industry with distinction, is renowned as the foremost peer qualification accredited globally. We acknowledge that the industry is evolving rapidly, and we are implementing an exciting digital transformation of our services to ensure our education methods stay aligned with the times."

📣 Great news for students, members and fellows!

The Institute and Shipnext, the digital SaaS (Software-as-a-service) Shipping Platform and Shipping Marketplace, are pleased to announce a new collaboration aimed at enhancing education within the shipping industry for its students. Under this agreement, Shipnext will provide full access to its platform free of charge for one year to registered ICS Students, as well as members (MICS) and fellows (FICS) of the Institute.

Shipnext offers a comprehensive suite of digital solutions including instant data and email processing, freight-matching, freight tendering and chartering, contract management, digital documentation flow, CRM and transportation management tools.

Don't miss the ICS Chartering Workshop at Breakbulk Americas in Houston this month! Building on the resounding success of our chartering workshop at Breakbulk Europe in Rotterdam in June, Philip Bacon, BSc, MBA, FICS, FCIarb, Dip Mar Arb, vice president of operations at shipowning group Siem Shipping Inc and Fellow of the ICS, will once again be giving professionals and those who work with chartering contracts the lowdown on the practice’s key principles and applications.

From Telex to Tech: The Digital Evolution of Shipbroking

As we venture deeper into the digital age, the world of maritime shipping continues to evolve, shaping and being shaped by technological innovation. This transformation has touched every aspect of the industry, and Institute Chairman Glenn Murphy reflects on his experiences on the profound shift in shipbroking in the latest episode of "The Last Dinosaur," a popular podcast produced by Aversano Chris.

Spotlight on China - Institute Director, Robert Hill FICS, was invited to join a panel at the first DSH International Shipping Innovation Conference in Shanghai on 09 July 2023.
Here he joined representatives from other key international maritime organisations and spoke about ways in which the shipping industry can promote the adoption of green technologies and how Shanghai's position as a major shipping hub can be leveraged to support this goal.
The conference was attended by over 500 delegates including government officials, international and local senior maritime representatives and maritime students of course!

Whilst in Shanghai, Robert also met the Deputy Mayor and Deputy Director Commission of Commerce of Pudong New Area where the Institute’s International Teaching Centre representative office is located. A meeting was also held with the Deputy Director and Shipping Division of the Shanghai Municipal Transport Commission who oversee the Institute’s courses in Shanghai. Robert, accompanied by Windy Zheng, paid a courtesy call to the new Deputy Director General and the Deputy Director of the Qualification Center of the Ministry of Transport in Beijing.

“We really appreciate all the support offered by the local teaching centre and I was so intrigued about their plans for developing an internationally recognised shipping services centre in Shanghai. The icing on the cake was our dinner with local members in Shanghai to update them on Institute matters and hear their thoughts about their Institute. 🌟 Member highlight 🌟
Edward Buttery FICS has taken quite an adventurous route to get where he is today - founder and CEO of Taylor Maritime Investments Ltd as well as CEO of drybulk carrier Grindrod Shipping Holdings Ltd.

He started on his career path conventionally enough, undertaking an undergraduate degree at Oxford University, before realising this was not for him. "I didn't stay at university, so I went into shipping. So, I embarked upon a 10-year self-teaching regime. I wanted to know about chartering, setting up new companies, shipbuilding, banking and finance." Edward Buttery FICS.

In this interview, Edward details his self-taught learning regime and proves that persistence and perseverance pay off - if you are willing to take some calculated risks.

Shipbroking in the future – there’s nothing artificial about that!
Institute Chairman, Glenn Murphy, gives his perspective to TradeWinds on developing a particular set of skills to set yourself apart from the crowd.

Glenn: “Shipping does not stand still: shipbroking is a multifaceted skill which has always moved with the times. Over the course of my career, spanning three decades, I’ve seen the shift from face-to-face trading to constant phone calls and from telex to email and now to digital platforms to share market insights. We are now facing the next wave of innovation in the form of artificial intelligence (AI). Some may see this as an opportunity to cut out the traditional intermediaries, whilst others may see this as tool to free-up the broker to focus on relationships and dealmaking. Quite how AI will shake-up the business of connecting and handling transactions remains to be seen.”

But according to Glenn, what has not changed over the years are the fundamentals and relationships in shipbroking. He says, “ Social media shipbrokers and a chatbot will never replace the added-value that a plugged-in, trained, well connected, and highly knowledgeable shipping professional brings to the table…. I am a passionate believer in the power of professional education and the importance of a back-to-basics approach to shipbroking. The most successful broker will always be the one who has a deep technical understanding of clients’ ships, ports served and the wider supply chain. They will be grounded in the values of a two-way value-adding relationship and most importantly, they will be trusted.”

For a working shipbroker to achieve success via the ICS, having the support and encouragement from their employers can make a huge difference to their career progression and development.

“For the future of our profession, it is imperative that employers in our industry, regardless of their size, place a profound emphasis on prioritising and nurturing the career development of their employees. By harnessing the globally recognised and esteemed professional qualifications provided by the ICS, they can effectively enhance and reinforce their in-house training programmes, fostering the confidence and excellence of their workforce.”

The Institute is moving forward with the times and we continue to invest in our core education and membership services and update our syllabus and online digital learning capabilities.
